Pam Anderson....

Remember, she's doing it for the children...or is it for the bears?
.................................

Actress lobbies Queen on fur hats
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3946015.stm

Actress Pamela Anderson has sent a petition to the Queen calling for
the traditional bearskin helmets worn by her Foot Guards to be
replaced.

The ex-Baywatch star has gathered 200 signatures from her fans for
the petition which was sent to Buckingham Palace with a personal
note on Friday.

Anderson, 37, is calling for a switch from the use of Canadian bear
pelts to synthetic materials in the headwear.

The towering black hats date back almost 200 years.

The petition reads: "We the undersigned urge the Queen to call on
the Ministry of Defence to cease the use of real fur on the uniforms
for the regiment of Foot Guards."

Anderson, who is in Britain to promote her new novel, is backing a
campaign by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The Canadian-born actress collected the signatures at a book signing
in London's Virgin Megastore on Thursday.

The hats are a key part of the uniform of the five Guards regiments -
Coldstream, Grenadier, Irish, Scots and Welsh - and are
quintessential to traditional ceremonies like Trooping the Colour.

'Satisfactory alternative'

A Peta spokesman said Anderson was "very passionate" about the
issue.

She said: "We have been working with Pam on finding a replacement
for the bearskin hats.

"Peta has worked with a top faux fur manufacturer to produce a
material that is now being field tested by the Ministry of Defence
to replace bear fur.

"During this process bears continue to be killed to make these
ceremonial hats."

But a British Army spokesman said a synthetic alternative had yet to
be found.

He said: "The army has been working closely with Peta because they
say they can produce a satisfactory alternative using artificial
fibre.

"So far, Peta has failed to do so."

But no bears were killed "simply for the caps", rather they were
killed to control the population, he said.

"Where we can use an artificial alternative we do so," he added.

Drummers in marching bands now wear fake leopard skin while the
smaller bearskins worn by the King's Troop are no longer made from
beaver fur.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said it was not yet known whether a
petition had been received.

Animal welfare groups say 40,000 black bears are killed every year,
which they say is far more than is needed to control their numbers.

A synthetic celebrity proposing a synthetic solution to a synthetic problem. What a way to jumpstart a sagging career.

Because it's tradition, something that this nation is steeped in.
And it also looks impressive.
It's only for ceremonial duties, you don't think they wear this to war do you???.

As for Pam Anderson, she can go and get stuffed, this PETA stuff gives me the shits.

Both had a purpose at one time.

The british wore read tunics so that blood would not show when they were shot. (so as not to upset other soldiers seeing blood in battle)

Just as the decks of gun batteries on ships were red so as not to show the blood.

The big hats are so at long range when shooting at a soldiers head you will hit the hat and not the head.

Doesn't anyone study military history anymore?

God I HATE people like that.  Shut the FUCK UP you dumb whore!!!     Your life might be all about APPERANCE and fake silicon breasts and porn and V.D. but other people in this world might actually believe in things of more SUBSTANCE !!!  It's not just for the fashion sense, it's for traditional reasons - you halfwitted bimbo!!

If she'd bothered to do her homework (which of course she didn't), she'd know that guard regiments have already tried to experiment with this in the past - and have failed.  When my father was in the service, the Danish guard regiment experimented with synthetics, and it didn't work at all!!

This kind of brainless crap really pisses me off.  It is so goddamn hard to get the fur for those hats, we don't need some dumb ditze hollywood slut making it harder!!!   I remember talking to the supply sergeants who were in charge of procurement for our uniforms, and they we incredibly frustrated because they had requested 200 new bearskins (that's what they estimated the regiment needed), and they had received 12 !!!    It's been getting harder and harder to get these pelts over the past few decades.

Actually, to make soldiers look taller hence scarer to the other side. Consider that most of the people in the Revolutionary War Period were quite short as compared to the dairy calcium enhanced Americans of today. But still a point well taken.

BZZT!

Wrong.

Urban legend.

The coats were red, but their waistcoats and breeches were white or buff. If you get hit in the leg or chest, you'd bleed red on white or buff- what's the use of that, if the redcoat was to disguise blood stains?

The reasons why the British army wore redcoats from the late 1600s on are many. Some are that the Coldstream Regiment, a regiment that went from the rebel side to the Royalist side in the English Civil War, enjoyed much favor, incl. becoming part of the Foot Guards regiments who guard the sovereign. Other regiments imitated the favorable regiments, in an effort to gain favor and prestige.

Secondly, the color was quite visible on the battlefield, a VERY important factor in the era of short-range black powder guns, since the guns made so much white or grey smoke on the battlefield, the possibility of "friendly fire" was great. Indeed, the French wore white uniforms in the American revolution. Other troops wore bright colors, too, such as musicians, who wore "reversed" colors, i.e., if the collar, lapel and cuffs color (AKA "facings") were, for example, yellow, the musicians wore yellow coats instead of redcoats, to denote they were musicians, and unarmed non-combatants. The soldier wanted to be visible.

As the British army became more successful, the red coat turned into a psychological weapon, too. The sight of redcoated soldiers served as a signal that a hard fight against an intractable foe was about to take place. Just look at the British Army's record in the Peninsular War against the French- after Corunna in 1809, the British army was never beat in a major battle by the powerful French ever again.

Thirdly, red wool, dyed with vegetable dye from the herb known as madder, is cheap....

Just as the decks of gun batteries on ships were red so as not to show the blood.

Ehhh...I've been on HMS Victory and HMS Warrior. The insides are painted white.....

Puh-leeze. What is your source for this one? The grenadier cap started out as a small mitre cap, like that of a bishop, so that the grenadier was not impeded in slinging his musket or throwing his bombs in the 17th century. If you did that while wearing a cocked hat (tricorne) you'd break the hat or drop your bomb.....

Grenadiers were usually veteran soldiers picked from the battalion companies of a regiment, taller than most, given special duties and training, and enjoyed a special elite status in the army due to their historically hazardous role in attacking fortifications and in street fighting.

Only one company of the ten companies in a regiment was made up of grenadiers. They were given the position of honor in assaults, as well as marched at the head of the parade when the regiment marched, a much-sought after position in the army.

Later, by the American Revolution, the British grenadier after 1768 adopted a taller, collapsible bearskin cap imitating those of the French and Russians, and by the 19th century grenadiers and fusiliers wore ever bigger and taller caps of bearskin stretched over a wicker frame. They were unwieldy to wear in battle, and were usually saved for special occasions. Nobody wore them, for example, in the Peninsular War, arguable Britain's best military performance ever. Those later varieties of grenadier caps (not "busbies", a different kind of low black fur cap, mostly worn by rifle regiments), mostly made around 1914 or so, are the ones the various Guards regiments wear to this day on parade, with their redcoats. They are in effect, wearing a 1914 pattern uniform today, exc. for the gun (SA-80), bayonet, and shoes.

It all may seem odd to us nowadays, but 200+ years ago, these guys were the best. By the American Revolution, the grenadier no longer threw grenades in battle, although still trained to do such, and the howitzer became more important to accomplish the same task, but the grenadier was still a big part of the British Army, until grenadier companies in regiments were abolished in 1861.

In the meantime, after grenadiers no longer threw grenades, the purpose of the ever increasingly larger caps was to make the big grenadier or fusilier look even more imposing, taller and fearsome than he already appears.

Doesn't anyone study military history anymore?

Oddly enough, Canadians have more  access to bear fur than Americans do. Canadians, for example, can have polar bear fur, whereas we Yanks are not allowed by Federal law to own/buy/sell polar bear fur unless it has been certified to have been harvested before 1972. Jail time, otherwise......

Wait, this has got to be a hoax. You can tell from the line about her being in England to promote her new
book. You have to be able to read and write before you can be an author. Those PETA people they'll do

In my guard regiment, there were two stories about our adoption of the bearskin hat.  One was that it made soldier appear taller and more imposing.  (And our regiment traditionally had a height requirement to start with - when I was in, it was 5'10".  At 6'3" I was the shortest guy in my platoon ).

The second reason given was that infantry were particularly vulnerable to heavy cavalry attack, and that SUPPOSEDLY the smell of bear was something that horses realy didn't like, and thus wearing bearskin could provide some protection against organized cavalry charges.  I have no idea if that story (or reasoning) is true or not, but it was part of the "lore" or the regiment - passed on from generation to generation of NCO's.

The height requirement of being around 6' tall for grenadiers was common in most European armies. Frederick the Great of Prussia had his "lange Kerls", basically any young man over 6' tall he could find, pressed into his army. Most armies were volunteer, with a bounty, but Frederick stretched the point, since discipline was so severe in his army, he found it somehow tough to get people to join.... When it came to the height requirement, the Russians did the same, as did the British and the French, picking experienced, taller-than-average soldiers already in the army to become grenadiers, but only in newly raised regiments did the British make people off the street into grenadiers, so that they would attract more civilians for recruitment by their bearing and demeanor.

In Napoleon's time, the story goes that he wasted all of his tall grenadiers in Russia in 1812, hence the lack of height of Frenchmen to this day, but I don't know whether that's an urban legend, too.

I don't know about bear smell scaring off horses. Sounds like another well-meant bit of lore. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the British army's Royal Scots Greys wore bearskin caps, as did many other dragoons and other cavalry men, and farriers wore them, too. Bearskin on soldiers' heads served as an atavistic reminder to illiterate European soldiers of the power and strength of the bear- symbols being very important in a pre-literate era, esp. simple direct ones.

The only real defense any infantry had against cavalry was forming square, and having infantry in the squares that could rake the cavalry with grapeshot.
