Plane Carrying Felons Tips Over on Tarmac

By Associated Press

October 23, 2004, 6:26 PM EDT

SALT LAKE CITY -- An airliner loaded with 68 federal prisoners tipped over on a wing after mechanics jacked up a set of wheels to replace a worn tire at the airport. No one was injured.

The Boeing 727 was making a weekly stop in Salt Lake City Friday to pick up federal prisoners and drop others off when mechanics began working on the plane.

Airport spokeswoman Barbara Gann said the plane was jacked up on asphalt not strong enough to handle the weight of a fully fueled Boeing 727. Mechanics also miscalculated the plane's center of gravity.

"They should have either moved it, drained it of fuel or made other accommodations," Gann said.

Maintenance workers and firefighters righted the plane using heavy equipment.

The inmates are being held in area jails while the plane is repaired, which officials said could take until Tuesday.

The chartered plane is owned by Planet Airways Inc. of Orlando, Fla. Last year another Planet Airways chartered flight carrying federal prisoners blew two tires while landing at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, forcing an emergency evacuation of the prisoners. No one was hurt.

I have just one thing to say to the charter company...

Find a new place to buy tires from.

you use the handcrank one, located by the spare tire!

they are actually not that big (well, it depends on how old the crap is that they're using) kinda like a garage floor jack on steroids.

Really?  I thought it would take a freaking lift truck or something!

You mean they were changing a 727 plane tire with this!

The 727 has the heaviest footprint of all airliners, even the 47-400 & 777.  This happens from time to time.

I remember when I worked at an FBO at Cincinnati-Lunken,we had one of those 30-ton wing jacks,(we had alot of ex-AF surplus equipment)I was put in charge of painting it,in addition to running the line, fueling the Corp.hangers,ect.... and what a lousey job I did painting that jack.BTW,every once in awhile,I'd have to fuel the Conair jet when it showed up at CVG.

Is it standard procedure to change tires with everyone on board?

I doubt it. I'm guessing special exceptions are made when your passengers are in leg-irons.
