I decided to exercise my rights as a free American.

I saw a nice underfolder AK that ilikelegs bought at the Dallas Gun Show and decided that I needed one. But I've always liked side-folders better than underfolders, mainly because the undefolders hit me in the cheek when I shoot them.

So, I ordered a Romanian side folder stock and had my buddy Tman fit it to my SAR.

No reason, except that I can.

Nice. You could buy them up here (sans folder) for $400 a pop until two years ago. That price included three 30rd mags.

Then CT "modified" the law.

I think it looks great, but will be uncomfortable to shoot. Definitely a race horse now, not a plow horse.

IIRC, I paid $265 for the SAR and $60 for the folder.

The 20 rounder is priceless.

Yep. Nothing is as comfortable to shoot as a wooden stock.

But I tell myself that I can now fold it and store it behind the seat in a vehicle easier.

Got to have some justification. Or maybe not.

My only AK is a Bulgarian SLR-95--with a thumbhole stock. I would not consider changing it as it fits me perfectly and is very comfortable. "PC" or not, I like it.

There are several masters out there now.
I would have to say tha FALARAK is the master now.
He can aim from the shoulder and bump his AR,
I can do it with my 9mm AR.

But bring it to Gunstock and I'll get you started.

While I don't mind muzzle breaks, I don't find they do much of anything, except make a lot more noise in some cases and make the firearm longer in others.

Hey, I put a slant brake on my SAR-1. Now it looks better and the slant brake doesn't increase the noise any. Plus the slant brake does help the rifle recoil more straight back. And it's removable too.

Good question.

Any change in the basic set-up of a weapon is for some reason. The folding stock gives some advantage in making the weapon smaller and easier to store in a small place.

But it has drawbacks. In this case, a poor cheek weld.

But if I wanted a good cheek weld, I could have just stuck with the original stock, or even put a longer, and better fitting polymer stock like LHD suggested.

I have done so on another AK.

But I just wanted portability and compactness on this one.

Beekeeper1,

I've found a thumbhole stock that I like. It's walnut stained hardwood stock similar to what the SLR-95 uses. It could have come off of a SLR-95 for all I know.

Problem is that it's 13" long. I have short arms, and 9"-10" would fit me better. Should I just cut 3" off with my miter saw? I just worry how difficult it would be to install the buttpad if I shortened it and if it would look too wrong.

Global has the parts you need.

slant brake - US made - pn - A-559 - $8.99
detent pin and spring - pn - B-620 - $6.00

You need a US made part to keep your parts count good.

Oh yeah. That is for a .30 cal barrel.

Let me check the outside dia. of my barrel. If your's is large enough it would still fit but the brake is sized for .30cal. Might not work quite as well for .22cal.

I'm back. You need a muzzle dia. of 0.552" or so to thread 14mm.
