Can't you make something like a wooden cheekpiece to fit it so that you wouldn't have to cheekweld a 5/16" steel rod?

Good question.
Any change in the basic set-up of a weapon is for some reason. The folding stock gives some advantage in making the weapon smaller and easier to store in a small place.
But it has drawbacks. In this case, a poor cheek weld.
But if I wanted a good cheek weld, I could have just stuck with the original stock, or even put a longer, and better fitting polymer stock like LHD suggested.
I have done so on another AK.
But I just wanted portability and compactness on this one.
