I went shooting this morning and a grey squirrel wandered onto the range, I had a magazine loaded with Hornady 55 gr. ballistic tip bullets and I fired from 60 yards. HOLY CRAP!!!!!
The only thing left was the tail after I shot it. I didn't bring my camera cause I'm a moron

yup. an AR is not what sportsmen use. there is no reason to hunt with an AR. there is no legitamate use to have these things. pffft.

You should try barking the squirrels. Never tried it with an AR but used to do it with a 45 caliber Kentucky Rifle when I was a kid. Wait until the squirrel is on the side of the tree, then shoot just beside him. Evidently the concussion of the hit kills them...the are dead as hell with blood coming out of their noses and ears.

You should go varmint shooting at some of the farms around here. The red mist is addictive. We've shot thousands of ground squirrels on the farms in Southern Oregon with an AR-15. The farmers prefer they be shot to resorting to poison which kills a lot more then the vermin.
Great practice at reading the wind, judgeing distance and timing. |

I'm just glad it wasn't a deer.
 We have a doe and fawn that have been sighted at the 100 yard line at our range. They are completely unafraid of gunfire. Everyone here has managed to not kill them yet. The fact that it would be against club rules, and out of season, and non-sportsman like would be the most obvious reasons. That being said I really don't think it is cool or interesting to kill things for the sake of killing. It goes against the grain of every hunter I know and hunt with. Not slamming you twonami because I find myself agreeing with you 95% of the time. Yes, I know you aren't a hunter and a lot of folks on here will say "it was only a squirrel", but that doesn't make it ok. Edit to add: I hunt deer with an AR, and squirrel with a .22. I'm willing to bet you could bark a squirrel with an AR, but the landowner may not like you shooting up his trees. Of course a head shot with an AR would be ideal. Bob |

My father got 26/25 targets while shooting trap. One was a crow that he hit along with the clay target. He even meant to hit them both....not.

I did it with a .30/30 one afternoon. And I kind of did with a rabbit. I was leading a running cottontail with my .22 and it went head over heels at the shot. Upon closer inspection, what killed it wasn't a bullet; it was a two-inch sliver of osage orange bark deeply imbedded in its neck. Well, technically that IS barking.... |

You did shoot this critter for food, correct? Squirrel stew is very good, I do enjoy it a couple times throughout the fall. I would doubt you would waste a small critter just for the hell of it (cause you felt the strength with your AR). ETA: damn typones. |

Gosh, haven't some of you guys heard of varmitting? I shoot woodchucks(groundhogs) for farmers here with my AR a lot, damn holes can make cattle/horses break their legs, and with animals like that you don't usually just set the leg... They can also be hazards to farm equipment.

The real question would be: Why would you want too? Geezus I wouldn't even pick a dead prairie dog up let alone thinking of eating it. Damn things are full of fleas, and carriers of the plague. Coyotes eat prairie dogs, after a good days shooting stick around the fun is just begining |

Varmint shooting is a great way to spend a sunny afternoon.
A tall glass of lemonade on the table... and red mist in the air. The AR-15 with a good bull barrel makes an EXCELLENT varmint rifle. I use that and a 10/22 for prairie poodles and chucks. I hope the "sensitive" men out there don't have too much of a problem with that.

Squirrel is good eats....I have shot things I didn't eat, but they were varmits. But its kind of a matter of opinion. I once shot an opossum off a trash can. Varmit in my opinion, but I had 3 different people want it to cook.
