In the past alot of people talked about the type of steel they used for their gongs and targets.

What type of steel will xm193 NOT penetrate at 100+ yards? There was a certain spec for the different steels that some would cut through like butter and others were ideal?


Basically we are having a few either, 12" x 12" targets or 12" diam targets made. Any recommendations?

armored steel is what you want.

Most of the steel you'll find is 'regular' rolled steel which is very soft.

3/4" at 100 yds will not penetrate rolled steel but will crater it up nicely.


btw, 12x12 is going to be HEAVY!

Now we are talking this is what i am looking for.

Actually have a friend that works at a plant and they have pretty much everything at their fingertips. Lots of scraps that can be cut to whatever needs.


What are the other grades of the steel?

AR500 at the top? Mid etc?

3/8" Thick mild steel would work good for XM19, you will get denting though

FWIW, at the 100 yard target, which is used quite often for zeroing at our private range, we have the steel angled down behind our particle board target holder. This allows us to deflect any rounds down into the ground and allows us to staple good zeroing type targets like the Redfield one and then we just replace the board when it gets shot up.

Ya never know when your gonna pull out the Weatherby 300 mag or some bud might bring over a 338 mag which will make a mess outta all but serious tooled steel, which makes ricochets  and splatter quite dangerous.

All our hanging steel runs from 200-800 yards, YMMV

A 500 plate, 3/8" thick. If you want a 12" sq. Target, cut the plate 12" X 15". Mount, or hang the plate at a 45 deg. angle, (top closer to shooter). this gives you a 12" sq. target and will direct the lead and jacket material away from the shooter and the plate will last much longer.
