The House just passed the repeal of the DC gun ban. The vote went though by about an 80 point margin. DC can again defend itself against crime!
Unfugginbelievable! Who would have thought it!
Great news for everyone, DC resident or not. |
Wow. Two gun bans repealed in one month. WTF, over??????
Didja notice the vote? 198-22 (R) 52-148 (D) (I) 1 Nay |
Um. Doesn't the Senate have a say in this? |
Uhm, no they can't. It has to pass the Senate. Then get signed by the President. DC can do NOTHING right now. This is just the first step in the law-making process. Didn't you take Government in High School? |
Well it will be a dangerous day in DC!
I guess they realized after all these years it didn't do anything. |
Has this already passed the Senate? Edit..... Damn you guys are quick ! |
Yes, it is a great step towords getting back to where we once were.
nope, it was killed twice in the Senate, this year. TXL |
Well, the senete may kill it, but I don't see that happening. |
Look one post up. Similar bills have been killed in the Senate already this year. |
just watched it on cspan. that was some good shit!
there is hope afterall!!! |
SLOW DOWN PEOPLE
We've got a long way to go: - Senate - President - Courts over rule the new law |
Was there anything tacked on? You know, "For the children?"
Like, "We'll repeal the gun ban, but you get an automatic 50 years in Club Fed for possessing ammunition..." silliness? |
Similar, but not the same. |
For once, I think time is on our side. The antis just keep losing ground...and traction.
The only way for senate Democrats to go for it would be to attach a AW Ban on it. Then for it to go back to House and hopefully get defeated.
By the way....
Should we go for the jugular and tack on a midnight bill repealing the '86 MG ban...like "they" did 18 years ago? |
+1 and Dupe, sort of |
"Yuh see, cuz there's really no difference between the two parties, I mean what have the repblicans actually done ... " Cincinnatus gets it. |

Am I now allowed to perhaps hypothetically pose that I may or may not have had a Mossie 12ga next to my bed when I lived near the Anacostia in the late 80s-early 90s? |
gosh talk about jumping the gun, I hope you know that the senate has to pass it and the POTUS has to sign. |
Hmm... Any word on whether Bush intends to sign this if it passes?
Sounds like good news, but I'm not so sure it'll pass the Senate. But if it doesn't, we can try again after the next election, which will probably replace a couple of Ds with Rs. But the best news of all is that we're trying to pass bills like this instead of trying to defeat bills like the AW ban. |
I never did well in social studies class Yes, I know they have to, but to my knowledge, there were no "extras" tacked onto the bill this time. The House's vote should be indicitive of what the Senate and the President will do. I should have said "Soon" DC can again defend itself against crime...sorry for the bad wording. My secretary is off today, so I have to proofread my own stuff. |
Keep your eyes open folks, watch out for an AWBan rider from Feinswine.
Well I say Good News is still Good News. I agree with mace that being on the offensive is always better than having to fight just to keep what's already ours. I'm impressed that the House took up a gutsy bill like this so close to election day. It means 250 of our Representitves know which side of their bread the butter's on!
-YJ PS Where's my Senator's phone number? |
Assuming that the repeal makes it through the Senate and the President, what will the CCW situation in DC be?
You're getting a little ahead of everything there Gunslinger |
I know. But I just get so excited about these things |
While this was a nice gesture by House Republicans, I doubt the Senate will move to vote on this issue, and even if they did I doubt the votes are there to pass it.
This was a move to shore up the conservative base of the GOP in a tight election year, nothing more. Still though, it shows the Republicans realize that they need to take our concerns seriously, and that is a good and positive thing! |

Two comments:
(1) WHEN would the Senate take this up? I'd love to have Kerry's feet to the fire if it arose prior to one of the debates, or at least before November 2. Then, we could really flush him out on his Second Amendment stance (or lack thereof). (2) Even though it may not be considered by the Senate soon (if at all), it would be a GREAT question for BOTH candidates at the debates. |
Was this just a handgun ban, or an all types of weapons including Ar15's ban?
Does DC allow private ownership of AR15's? Thanks. . . I don't live there, but I am curious as I didn't know the details. |
I think everything is illegal there. In Chicago only handguns are illegal. |
I honestly doubt that a repeal of the 86 ban would be supported by- influential- gun owners. Remember some of these guys have 20k$ + invested in these things. if the 86 got repealed, prices would plunge and their investment would be worthless. I would bet some of them would fight tooth and nail to keep that ban in place. Just a guess, I would hope I am wrong. |

pay attention people! |
The bill will not be addressed in the Senate this session. Sen. Frist has already indicated that the agenda for this session is full up until recess. This is good news for us because Feinstein has promised to attach a semi-auto ban amendment to this bill and she has the votes to do it right now. Putting off until next session gives us the opportunity to vote out some anti Senators and hopefully change the March vote tally from a pro-ban Senate to an anti-ban Senate. However, we have to do our part in November, because if we don't it is just a matter of time until a ban does pass the Senate. |

This legislation would end the handgun ban, and would also eliminate the current requirements that long guns be stored unloaded AND either dissassembled or locked away. It also gets rid of registration for long guns. |

The best way to determine who's *really supportive* of this kind of legislation is the list of cosponsers. For both these links, click on "Bill Summary and Status" to see votes, cosponsers, etc.
This is the house version: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c108:2:./temp/~c108xx5DYn:: and the Senate: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c108:1:./temp/~c108xx5DYn:: I personally like the 2nd Ammendment references in the pre-amble to both bills. This in itself provides a Congressional precedent if I am not mistaken. |
