i don't see why one shouldn't be allowed, since it is even less 'dangerous' than riding a motorcycle.

no in Montana - Seat belt laws and all.
Did it as kids ALL the time. In HS - a guy one class behind me fell out and died after floogin his noggin hauling furniture. My kids sit inside w/ seatbelts now!

In Kentucky there is no law against it but there is a law that says there must wear your seatbelts...but that law isn't written as a primary offense, so they can't pull you over for it.
 So the answer is yes unless a cop wants to write you up, in which case he will find something wrong with the vehicle in order to pull it over and then issue a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt.

I believe it is legal on regular roads in Missouri, but NOT legal on highways.

I actually looked for this law in Florida Statutes and found language stating that no one can ride on the OUTSIDE of the vehicle (which I took to mean the hood or fender, etc). Can't find that statute, though. There was also some language that stated that the number of front seat passengers cannot exceed the number of seat belts.

Read up on the California law regarding this. It's exemptions are similar to some other states that have some type of law regarding riding in a cargo area. Try Googling the info Linky to all 50 states: regulations by state |

In TX, nobody under 18 in the bed.
If riding in the bed (and you are over 18) your ass must be planted on the floor of the bed, not hanging off the side or on the tool box. |

I just checked that link, and Montana has NO restrictions. Also, there were a couple high school kids here that died when screwing around...a couple guys in the back and the driver went around a corner way too fast. The laws here didn't stop this stupidity. I love Tenesee: "OK for anyone 12 and older, 6-11 is OK as long as you're not on the highway or interstate.  I got harrassed here in Kali by a Sheriff for riding in the back of a truck to the top of the boat ramp parking lot. Apparently, you could ride to the top of the boatramp, but not 100ft. past the top into the parking lot. We had gone past the invisible "line." Just more BS I'm looking forward to leaving behind.

Yes in WI if you are sitting on the bed floor, and eithe back against the side or against the cab. Against the tailgate is a big no-no...sitting ON the wheelwells is also a big no-no. Standing in the bed is a major no-no.

If your 5 year old kid is in the cab of a truck, he has to be belted/in a safety seat. But it's OK for him to ride in the bed of the truck . |

I don't like it when people ride in the back of the pickup because they always seem to stare at you if you are driving behind them. They make direct eye contact too. It creeps me out.

Last weekend, I was in the back of a truck drinking my ass off infront of cops. I did offer them a beer, they didnt want any. It was in the 4x4 jamboree at Indianipolis. For part of the cruize line, we were following a truck that several girls earning lots of marti gras beads.
 The cops were giving out beads, too.

You mean it's legal to make the choice to put yourself in a position of possibly having your brains scattered over the road. I have to wear a helmet when I'm on my bike. I'd wear one if I didn't have to. But it should still be my choice. |
