I like the 7.62X39, it is useful for hunting deer, fighting and is cheap enough to plink with to my hearts content. I like the .223 but it is s little more expensive than 7.62X39 and funds have been kind of tight the last couple years, so economics have changed my opinion.

Since you say 'all-around', I'd have to go with .308/30-06. There's not any job the .223 can do that the .30 caliber can't. But there certainly are jobs the .30 can do that the .223 can't. Granted, I like many calibers for specific purposes, but if I could only have one and it had to be a do-all caliber rifle, the .308 or 30-06 would be my choice.

They aren't interchangeable. The question was "round" not bullet.

The Swiss GP-11 is, IMHO, a tremendously accurate round. It's milsurp that shoots like Match Ammo.

Same bullet, different case.

The case is, obviously 55 millimeters long (4 mm longer) and I believe (but can't be sure w/o looking at blueprints) that the case has more taper than the NATO round.

However, with that being said, I would buy a 5.56x45mm anyday due to crappy ammo selections in 5.45x39mm.

I had to go a little against the grain and go with the .30-06. It isn't the best for all jobs but it does great at many jobs. I can go with bullet weights from 110 to 220 grains and hit at far distances with just a little more umph than with a .308.

Probably I'm a little tainted in that the first high-powered rifle I really remember is my dad's 03-A3. Over 40 years later I still own an A3 as well as an M1. I also use a bolt gun in '06 as my "big" hunting gun.

My favorite, too, and I'll take it in a bolt gun that does NOT take a detachable mag.

I'd like to choose a .308 AR as my favorite, but since nobody wants to standardize on magazines (nevermind that they're expensive), I can't.

The deal with different magwells on the different AR .308's reminds me of external extractors on a 1911....awesome idea if they were all the same, but since they're not, I'll just stick with internals....

I'm very aware they aren't interchangeable, but even .308 milsurp can shoot like match ammo...from a bolt gun, which is what I shoot GP11 through (a K31 in my case).

If by "practical" difference you mean "it's just different", that's fine, but if you're going to tell me the GP11 is inherently more accurate, harder-hitting, longer-range, etc...I'm gonna have to go and hoist a BS flag

I have 2 favorites, and both fill a definite niche.

First is the 8mm Mauser, powerful round, good ballistics, mild recoil, and will take anything on this continent with ease. May not be the best round for the large bears, but it will do the job just fine.

Second is the 25-06. Flat shooting, very mild recoil, very accurate round, large weight range of bullets. Great groundhog, coyote, fox, deer, bear round. I would even use it for elk with the 120 gr Nosler or Barnes X bullet.

Just my opinions of course.

I voted .308. If I could only have one centerfire rifle round, that would be it.

Granted, the 30-06 is a slightly better purely from the standpoint of the round itself. However, I also like the shorter action allowed by the .308 and the more plentiful supply of recently manufactured mil-surp ammo.

For a variety of reasons, there’s a lot to be said for using a round that’s in current military service.

Free country. Call "BS" all you want. The thread title is, "What is your favoriate all around rifle round?"

The Swiss 7.5 is the round I shoot most often (other than 9mm

). I hunt it with one of my K31's with a scout scope and I target shoot with another K31 and a K11. By the grace of God, someday I'll win the lottery and buy a Stgw.57. So if you're trying to get me to say the 7.5 is a .308 - then I'm not. BTW - I own two weapons in .308. The Swiss ammo is the most accurate ammo I own and the rifles are the most fun to shoot.

The Swiss 7.5 is my favorite round. And let me know what Milsurp .308 you're shooting that is comparable to Match. I've got Hirt, Aussie, Port and SA.

Actually, I prefer the .270, followed closely by the .30-06.

The .270 is fast, flat, accurate and doesn't beat you to death when you shoot it.

The '06 will drop anything on 2 or 4 feet in North America.

.223? Great round but the above have more long distance calling ability.

I know my least favorite:

7.62x39
.22LR

Favorite round is a tougher question. I love .223 but I also love anything that will permanently bruise your shoulder...M44's M1's and Mauser 98's are good for that

I love my .270.

Remmington 700 BDL (LH bolt), 130 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip, 59.5 gr of IMR 4350, CCI primers = 1/2 MOA at 100 yards with 5 shot groups.

7mm Remmington Magnum ain't bad either...

If we're talkin' SHTF, total breakdown of society/back to living like it's the 19th century kind of thing, then .22LR (preferably a o/u setup with a 20 ga. At the same time I'd be furiously brushing up on my bow and arrow making skills.

If we're talkin' a temporary infrastructure breakdown (Wal-Mart will be open in a month or so), then 5.56.

But you've got to remember the wise words of the poet:

"There ain't nothin' that a man cain't fix
With $400 and a .30/06"

If it's a situation where I had enough money to do all the hunting I want to do and I had only one cartridge to choose from, I'd go with a .338Winmag.
