And then register it as a SBR, or does the rifle have to be registered as a SBR rifle right from the get go?
In other words, can you do long gun to SBR conversions by re-registering them?

you have to have permission first.

Do the paperwork on the gun ahead of time and then purchase the upper or cut it.

No sense getting caught doing something bad.....

Talk to someone that knows the ins and outs of the procedure first...

Ok, so if you register it and get the go ahead, pay the 200 bones then your good to go and can hack away? Can you register shotguns as SBR's as well?

Yes, but they would be SBS's (short barreled shotguns - less than 18" bbls).

No, it does not have to be a SBR right from the go. You can take a standard rifle you already own and SBR it. As others said, you do the paperwork first. Don't know what you mean by "re-register".

No, but you can register them as short barrel shotguns. You can also have a rifle with no butt stock and a forward pistol grip and a six inch barrel as an "AOW" or any other weapon.

However to be an AOW it cannot ever have hade a buttstock attached.Example a Mossberg cruiser coud be an AOW but a 500 with a buttstock would be a SBS wether it still had a buttstock or not.
