I saw some of it, and i'm glad Matt did the interview instead of Katie. It would have gone the other way with her doing the interview.

I'm guessing that they are observing Dan Rather's uncomfortable situation and are trying to not get into a similar predicament.

Lauer hates being in Katie's shadow. He and Katie hate each other. Lauers wants to break out and he might just turn into a hard interviewer in order to do so. As long as he copies Katie's ass-kiss-the-liberal style, he will simply look like Katie's cabana boy

They try to pair male and females in interviews. If there is a male to be interviewed alot of times they will get a female to do the talking.
