I have been around the block with a few buds over this and am getting ready to buy...............the Cummins.  I am mainly going to do some light hauling and alot of commuting.  I have heard the HEMI is way underpowered for the 2500 and the mpg is less than stellar.  Your thoughts?  I defer to the ARFCOM thinktank (with the exception of Adm Ackbar)...

Torquewise, I know it isn't an issue.

I would go for the diesel. lasts longer, better milage, better resale, more power, etc. etc.

You cant go wrong with cumins.

CTD. The hemi gets horrible milage, and will get smoked by the diesel anyway

Diesel all the way, we have a durango with the 5.9 and we get about 11mpg no matter what. I know the hemi has some new technology that shuts down power to half of the cylinders when you are crusing down the highway. But deisel will get way better milage, have more torque and the engine will last forever if you take care of it.

No doubt about it, Cummins!!  Cost a little more up front, but you'll save that in fuel alone. I've done the big V8 4x4 thing - it ain't pretty where fuel is concerned!

A better comparison would have been 8.1 Vortec vs V10. How does the 5.9L GM engine compare?

I don't have big interest in trucks, but I do watch the Chrysler cars, and Chrysler has been having some real dismal reliability issues with the cars. I will bet that Chrysler's new Hemi is going to have problems. Me, if I were buying the truck, I would go with the tried and true Cummins deisel.

I went with the RAM SRT-10:
- 500HP/525ft-lb V10  (same engine as Viper)
- 6-speed standard (same transmission as Viper)
- Dana-60 rear-end
- 22" wheels with Perelli Scorpions
- 500-watt Infinity sound system with sub-woofer/amp/6-CD changer/8 speakers
- ...

I had a 2002 Z06 'Vette before this. Doesn't corner like the 'Vette, but noticably faster acceleration - actually puts a bigger grin on my face than the Z06 did.

Very intimidating vehicle. Not very practicle, but one heck of a pick-up.

Diesel, diesel and diesel.  Oh, and diesel.  For reasons of fuel efficiency, fuel cost, longevity, power and overall satisfaction.

My 1-ton 2001 Cummins HO gets 17 mpg and weighs 2,000 lbs. more than my '97 5.9L gas hawg which gets, at best, 13.5 mpg.  Combine that with the fact that the fuel costs way less and the diesel can do LOTS of things that the gas truck can't.  Well, if it weren't for Mrs. BlammO, the gas truck would be gone.

I have driven them both.  The Hemi has the potential to be a very
peppy and fun engine, in a car.  It is NOT a truck engine.  Truck
engines need lots of torque way down low in the RPMs.

Make usre you wait for the "Super 600" Cummins, otherwise you can't buy the "Triple Nickel Cummins", which is the HO Cummins, because of Cali smog laws you have to step down below 500 pound feet to the SO Cummins.

Cummins without a doubt. Cummins KNOWS diesels like the AR forum KNOWS AR's. You get a Cummins, you have a GOOD diesel.
Besides, technically its not a Hemi engine anyways. Excellent marketing on Dodges part.

I picked up an 04 Ram 1500 Quad Cab with the HEMI. With the stock tires on it ( Mich 245 70 17's) I was getting 21MPG on the highway. That was driving an avg 67mph over a 160 mile trip. Now with a little more agressive tread and bigger tire, I am getting 18-19MPG on the same highway trip. I don't feel the HEMI is underpowered at all. My listed mileage is 17MPG per the window sticker. Driving so close to the posted speed limit has taken some getting used to, but it keeps my mileage affordable.

First off, you obviously drive like a maniac.  I too have the 5.9 Durango, and I get 15mpg.

Secondly, only the Hemi's in the cars have the cylinder shut-down feature.

I've got an '03 Durango R/T with the 5.9, and I see 12 mpg regularly.....

As for the original question, Cummins all the way baby!  Head over to www.turbodieselregister.com and see what some of these guys are doing with their Cummins.  I have a friend local to me who spent about $1,500 on his Cummins in go-fast parts, and he dyno'd 500 HP and 900 TQ at the rear wheels.  It was fun watching him spank cars at the drag strip (and he has the 6 speed too!)

For ME, a truck should be a truck, as in offroad capable.

I don't see the point of trying to make it a sportscar, other than that you can.

Well, to each his own, this is America.

While I love the look of 22~24" wheels on my SUV, I won't buy them.  The SUV is for onroad/offroad, I've got the Corvette for onroad performance.

Ever drive one?  Lot's of fun, that's (part) of why they keep selling.  (too damned small though)

Very good handling car with reasonable limits - you can really  ring it out on a on-ramp without getting dangerously fast or attracting too much attention.

Basically, on the street you can "use" more of what the car has to offer more of the time.  You can drive 9/10th, 10/10th.  You can run it full throttle 1st through 4th gear.  Try that in a Corvette, and you are running big time triple digits eating up road like crazy.

First off, hit Dodge Truck World Forums before you decide.

Second off, I own a 2004 Quad Cab Short Bed, with the Hemi. There are guys with 2500's pulling 14.x second quarter mile times, with just cold air intakes and weight management (remove the spare, etc).

For a stock truck, that's pretty good.

If you want raw torque up front, the diesel is the way to go, and there are guys with modded Cummings who will flat out own Hemis...but they're modded. If you want pulling power, you want a diesel. They also cost up front in price, and in just finding diesel (not a fuel I can pull into any gas station and get around here; there's relativly few stations that sell diesel around here, and I'm within an hour of NYC, so take that for what it's worth).

For fun driving? Hemi. That thing pulls more than my Jeep Wrangler did (and hello, torque), it still pulls at 140 (if you had a 2003 and could get the SuperChips computer flash, it removes the 105mph or so speed limit/cutoff), and hell...it's a hemi Not a "true" hemi if you believe the internet buzz, but still, it's close enough in this day and age.

Your call; there are guys with modded Cummings who will embarass tractors when it comes to pulling, and flat out spank a 'vette on a quarter..but they're seriously modded.  YMMV.

I know! I was happy as a fly in shit when it started to run that mpg's. It was not doing so great untill about 55,000 miles. I get the 24 running between 60 and 65 mph. It gets about 18/20 running at 70 mph. As today I tood a 23' Keystone Outback travel trailer (8,200lbs.) to Kingsport, TN. and running on 25E and 11W at 60mph I was looking at about 17mpg.

Now, when I am at home and Jenn and I go out for the day we leave the Mazda 626 4cyl at home cause it only gets about 18mpg. I wish I never bought that car (mpg's suck)

Last NE Get-Together in PA, I got 22.5mpg from my 2003 7.3L Powerstroke. The trip was six hours each way.

My father's 2001 2500HD Duramax has never gotten better than 19mpg. He just bought a '93 Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 with the Cummins. He hasn't had it long enough to come to any conclusions yet, other than as a whole, the truck is rough around the edges.

I didn't say that the SRT-10 was faster in the quarter mile or any other standard test of speed.

I just said that the acceleration (I should have said immediate) seems noticably faster - Z06 is an all-around sports-car - the SRT-10 is a brute.

The V10 seems to have a much better initial punch.

That 500HP V-10 is very impressive.

Two very different vehicles - both alot of fun.

BTW, some of the guys over on the SRT-10 forum who race are getting down into the 12's in the 1/4-mile with factory SRT-10's.

Don't always believe the factory specs. I owned a Z06 for two years, have driven many C05's, and have about 2,500 miles on my SRT-10.
