The most powerful hurricane to hit the Caribbean in years destroyed a 17th-century prison, leaving criminals on the loose, officials said Wednesday. American medical students were taking precautions against looters.

More American Medical Students, eh?  Time for a re-visit of the Rangers and Paratroops?

"It looks like a landslide happened," said another student, Nicole Organ, 21, of Toronto "There are all these colours coming down the mountainside - sheets of metal, pieces of shacks, roofs came off in layers."

She said that the danger didn't end with the winds. Organ said she wandered downtown later and saw bands of machete-wielding men looting a hardware store.

Lazarevic said the mostly American students were arming with knives, sticks and pepper spray for fear that looters would move into areas near the school.

"We don't feel safe," she told The Associated Press by telephone.

Bedaau said every police station in the country had been damaged, hindering efforts to control the looting. He said other Caribbean countries were sending troops to help patrol.

A Grenadian official was on the idiot tube tonight caliming that 90%, yes 90%! of the buildings on Grenada were destroyed!!!  If this is even close to being true, well, I really feel for the people there.  That has got to suck bad.  The video showed severely damaged buildings and homes.

You guys in the paths of storms like that really have my simpathy..

You must've watched the movie.  Was it not the Rangers who rescued the students?

It was a joint effort throughout the campaign.  Operation Urgent Fury carried out every mission (minus the initial insertions) jointly with either Rangers and Marines or 82nd Airborne troopers and Marines.

Burb:

"Even before securing Point Salines airfield on the first day, Rangers had moved to evacuate American students at the True Blue campus of St. George's Medical Center. The campus, located at one end of the 10,000-foot runway the Cubans had been building, was reached easily and the students were rescued. A second campus at Grand Anse was farther away, and retreating Cubans and PRA units blocked the Rangers from the students.

By afternoon the Point Salines air field was secured from all but sporadic mortar and small arms fire, and Rangers were moving against PRA positions near St. George's, the capital. Other Rangers removed obstacles on the Point Salines runway, and elements of the 82nd Airborne Division flew in to add more people and heavier weapons to the assault."
