Here's a $200 strategy from Hugh Hewitt.

Now, assuming you have at least $75 and a desire to make the elections of 2004 a decisive moment in the war on terror, here's what you do:

1.  Send $25 to John Thune, who is going to retire Senator Tom Daschle in South Dakota;

2.  Send $25 to George Nethercutt, who is going to retire Patty Murray in Washington State;

3.  Send $25 to Bill Jones, who is going to retire Senator Barbara Boxer in California; and

If you have another $75, then here's round two:

1.  Send $25 to Jim DeMint, who is going to take the open  senate seat in South Carolina;

2.  Send $25 to Richard Burr, who is going to take the open senate seat in North Carolina;

3.  Send $25 to Pete Coors, who is going to take the open senate seat in Colorado; and

Finally, if I can get you to spring for another $50:

1. Send $25 to Senator Lisa Murkowski to assist in her defense of her senate seat in Alaska; and

2.  Send $25 to Mel Martinez in Florida, to help elect the first Cuban-American to the United States Senate.

With less than two months to the vote, contributions and arguments have to be made now to bear fruit then.  You really can't put off the effort much longer and hope to have an impact. So spring some bucks from your wallet and vote with your dollars for a serious group of leaders in D.C. to fight the war.

Yea, thanks for the post.  I was going to send more money to the NRA, but I figured I need to help the candidates that will ultimately help the NRA anyway.

The $$$ you spend on your collection instead of gun-friendly politicians may ultimately lead to the election of people who will outlaw your collection. Yes, there's no way to prove this, but consider: George Soros has committed $15.5 MILLION of his own personal fortune to remove George Bush from office. This money ultimately goes to advertising agencies that produce very influential commercials critical of Bush. The swing voters and politically naive are influenced by them. What GWB has going for him is that instead of a few large donations, he generally gets lots and lots of smaller donations. So if you have no problem pissing away $20 for beer in an evening, how about stepping up to throw $20 to GWB?

Excellent post.  I have only been a gunowner since 1999 and have donated enough since 2000 to buy a nice AR-15 and a nice semi-auto.  It has to be done.  I give to Swiftvets, NRA-PVF, RNC funds, Bush-Cheney, Ehrlich (now GOP gov of MD), and a number of House and Senate seats.  I will be supporting Thune and Coors for sure.  From what I can tell my income is about average for this site, and I wish I didn't have to spend this $$$ but we are up against Hollywood millionaires and sickos like Soros so us small givers have to band together and contribute to beat them.  Soros and Holllywood hate gun ownership!!

Someone asked how spending money would help, let me discuss some of these races so we all understand what is at stake.

Quoted:
Here's a $200 strategy from Hugh Hewitt.

Now, assuming you have at least $75 and a desire to make the elections of 2004 a decisive moment in the war on terror, here's what you do:

1.  Send $25 to John Thune, who is going to retire Senator Tom Daschle in South Dakota;

Daschle has been the Senate Leader for the Dems, he has a HUGE campaign warchest and is outspending Thune tremendously. With more than 5 months to go until the election, Daschle had already spent $8.3 million setting a new record for political spending per capita in a Senate campaign.

Despite this John Thune has stayed within the margin of error in polls and is actually polling higher than Daschle by 2% in the last poll. However, he was still within the margin of error. Thune tried to unseat Tim Johnson in 2000 and lost by just over 500 votes. This election could be just as close. If Thune wins, we replace Daschle (GOA-F) with Thune (GOA-B). We also showcase the power of gun owners by unseating the Senate Minority Leader and incumbent - not to mention sweet payback to the guy who helped orchestrate  the Dems amendment attack to the lawsuit protection bill after signing on as a sponsor of that bill.

2. Send $25 to George Nethercutt, who is going to retire Patty Murray in Washington State;

In March, Patty Murray (GOA-F) voted for the semi-auto ban, for registration of private sales, for and for the Kennedy ammo ban. Would you rather have her or George Nethercutt  (GOA-A-) who has such a solid voting record in the House that GOA gives him the rarely received A- rating. Is that worth $25 to you?

Murray has raised $3 million more dollars than Nethercutt and has twice the campaign cash on hand.

3.  Send $25 to Bill Jones, who is going to retire Senator Barbara Boxer in California; and

Boxer is a die-hard rabid grabber. Bill Jones has been a pro-gun vote. Boxer had $7 million in campaign cash at the beginning of August. Jones had only $1 million.

Despite the total ass-whupping in funding, Jones was polling within 6% of Boxer on August 19. When the alternative is Boxer, what candidate isn't worth $25? Edited to add that Boxer has started spending some of that cash advantage and Jones is now trailing Boxer by double-digits. Jones says he supports renewal of the ban in media coverage.

With that comment, I'd write off Jones at this point. He is only marginally better than Boxer and his odds aren't looking good.

1.  Send $25 to Jim DeMint, who is going to take the open  senate seat in South Carolina;

This is the battle for Hollings (GOA-F) seat. DeMint (GOA-A) has the coveted and rarely seen A rating from GOA. He is a solid RKBA supporter and he is pounding his competitor in the polls. Is it worth $25 to make sure he continues to do so and replace an F-vote in the Senate with an A-vote? It is to me...

9/15 Update - latest polls show Tenebaum (the Dem) closing the gap but still behind. Let's not let a sure thing for gun owners slip away through laziness.

2.  Send $25 to Richard Burr, who is going to take the open senate seat in North Carolina;

This is for Edwards (GOA-F) open seat. If Burr (GOA-B-) doesn't winn, former Clinton chief-of-staff and proud gun grabber Erskine Bowles (GOA-F) will take the seat. Burr is 8 points behind and also getting pounded in spending. Is it worth $25 to give him a chance?

3.  Send $25 to Pete Coors, who is going to take the open senate seat in Colorado; and

Coors participated in the "I'm the NRA" ads years ago before he ever had political aspirations. He also went on record as opposing not only the ban; but supporting repeals of the Lautenberg Amendment, Brady Bill, 1968 GCA and 1934 NFA. Can you get any more hardcore than that?

He is running at a dead tie (48%-47%) with Ken Salazar who supports the ban and has signed the MMM pledge card. Salazar didn't face any serious competition in his primary and has a full campaign chest.  Coors had a hard fought primary with Republican Bob Schaefer and his campaign warchest is severely depleted. Is a Senator who would support a repeal of the 1934 NFA worth $25? You be the judge.

Edited to add: Coors allows you to append a message to your contribution so you can tell him that it was his Second Amendment stance that convinced you to donate.

Finally, if I can get you to spring for another $50:

1. Send $25 to Senator Lisa Murkowski to assist in her defense of her senate seat in Alaska; and

Murkowski and Knowles have the same public stance on guns. The difference is Knowles will vote to place Leahy, Kennedy, Schumer and Feinstein in charge of the committee that oversees gun legislation in the Senate. Murkowski will not. Is that worth $25?

2.  Send $25 to Mel Martinez in Florida, to help elect the first Cuban-American to the United States Senate.

This open seat was held by a GOA-F rated senator. Martinez opposes the ban and his opponent supports it. Want to replace a F-rating with a pro-gun vote? Is that worth $25?

For perspective

In March the Senate voted 52-47 to renew the ban. If the Senators named above win their races, the new vote tally would be 46-53. That means the ban lacks a majority in both the Senate and the House. More importantly it gives us a chance to start trying to repeal legislation since we now have enough votes to overcome the RINOs. We can't beat a filibuster; but we can start chipping away at some of the more obscene laws. Is that worth $250?

EXCELLENT POST B_R!

I concur.  I'm going to double down on Hewitt's rec's.   If all the gun owners actually started taking the other half of the political process -- getting our folks in office -- seriously, we'd be doing much better.

Yes, think about it - for $250 you could help guarantee we remain ban-free from now until 2007. If the Republicans don't win big in the Senate this November, you'll end up wasting more than $250 just in the buying frenzy to get all you can before a new ban takes place.

This would be the best money spent by a long shot - and the great part is you don't even have to spend $250. Pick and choose which races you think are most important and spend what you can - even $25 makes a difference when you don't have George Soros funding your campaign.

So, old man, are you implying that because I disagree with Hugh Hewitt's $200. stragety I do not have common sense?  What are you, angry at the world?  Listen pop, YOU send YOUR money to the politicians, I'll keep mine and spend it on my guns and supporting accessories.  When and if they come for my guns, I'll rely on what I have, you can rely on the hope and faith you put in your politicians.

I hope that your thinking is not  so limited in scope, that you have forgotten that in America, it is OK to disagree with others . . . .

No flame; but if gun owners had that same attitude in November 2002 we would have lost a bunch of seats that made the sunset of the ban possible today.

As for California, Jones is polling only 6% behind an incumbent Senator who has a 7-1 cash advantage on him. In political lingo, that is the equivalent of a race too close to call between a one-legged man and an Olympic sprinter. If Jones manages to beat Boxer, I guarantee you will see a change in attitude among California Democrats... maybe not all of them and probably not enough to insure immediate changes; but it will happen.

However, let's just assume you are right and nothing you do will make a difference in California. Do you want to have a free state to move to one day in the future? Or do you want them to all be like California?

I live in Texas - I feel quite happy with my state; but I kicked in $25 to Jones because I want to see my fellow gun owners in California taste a little of the same freedoms I have. Is it too much to ask that California gun owners show at least that much concern?

We all need to have both a local and national participation in defending our civil rights.  It appears that this misguided AWB legislation will now sunset, but it does not mean that we can stop here.  There will be other, perhaps more draconian, attempts to take our guns and deny us out civil rights.  We do need to help elect politicians favorable to our cause and we do need to support those who have stood by us.  We cannot simply enjoy this victory or rant amoung ourselves about attacks upon us.  We really need to DO something proactive to prevent this from happening again.  Commit your time, effort, and any dollars that you can afford into securing our future.  PARTICIPATE IN THE SYSTEM AND VOTE.

On another note, has anyone considered that a lot of President Bush's picks for judges are very pro-gun, and these people are being held up by the Senate?  Also, several of the USSC justices will be retiring during the next four years.  Do we really want a Democrat, anti-gun Senate deciding who will replace them?

By the way, our Washington politicians just voted themselves another raise:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- With little debate, House lawmakers on Tuesday included themselves as part of a pay raise that all federal employees will receive next year.

The cost-of-living raise would be the sixth straight for members of the House and Senate, boosting the salaries of lawmakers, now $158,100, by about $4,000 in the new calendar year.

So, they will make roughly $162,000.00 per year.  How much do YOU make per year, and is what you do more "important to society" than what they seem to do??

My $.02 on this raise is:
