We do lots of X vs Y so why not.

Considering the following, which is the better round for hunting deer sized game?

Stuff them with good bullets. Which is more effective at 100 yds? How about 300 yds?
Cost of the uppers? (I own a 7.62x39 upper but am looking for a “deer upper”)
Cost of the ammo?
Ease of reloading?
Ease of getting high cap mags after the ban?

Im interested in a 6.8 AR type myself, BUT

7.62X39 ammo is cheaper and more available (for now)

and the AK is cheaper, much more reliable, and has cheap bombproof mags

just get an AK with a siderail and get some optics for it!

if you have a 762 upper just use it, I am guessing A 154gr soft point would work

Everybody knows the AK and 7.62 is a far superior weapon to anything the AR/M16 brings to the table.

Comparing the trajectories, 7.62x39 drops like a rock compared to 6.8SPC.

Based on all I have read the 6.8 is superior to the 7.62x39 in everything except availability and low price (the military is buying up everything).

It has a trajectory similar to the 7.62 x 51 Nato.

Reloading is just as simple, nothing complex.

Mags might be an issue but I read over on the AR-15 forum that you can us ordinary AR mags but only with IIRC about 6 rounds in the mag. Deer hunting shouldn't be an issue as the first shot is the most critical.

Mag conversion kits are available from MSTN. They hold 15 and 25.

We should be able to buy production PRI mags in two weeks...

Within 200 yards the deer won't know the difference. As the range increases past 200 yards, the higher BC of the 6.8 will translate into a flatter trajectory and less wind drift which makes range and wind estimation less critical.

7.62 for all the above reasons.

just treat it like what it is-keep shots close.
i've hl'ed 125 and 150 grain soft points for semi-cheap hog and coyote ammo.

I believe Barnes is going to introduce some 85 to 100 grain range X-bullets for the .277 family of bullets, good bullets for Deer plinking.

What is your source for the Barnes rumor?

Barnes discontinued a 100gr X bullet in 2002, and discontinued the 120gr X in 2003. I called them a couple months ago to confirm.

Can you even find many properly sized hunting bullets for the 7.62x39?

I doubt that will be an issue with the .277 caliber.

I thought I saw it in a SWAT or the other law enforcement gun magazine in Walmart that I was browsing as the wife was galavanting thru the womens clothes. I know the cover of the magazine mentions the Remington 700 police in 6.8 SPC.
