India vasectomies
August 29, 2004

Five farm labourers were forced to undergo vasectomies by their landlord in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh so he could receive a concession on a gun permit, it was reported yesterday.

In Uttar Pradesh, anyone applying for a gun permit has to produce proof that he has invested 50,000 rupees ($A1,538) in a state-sponsored savings scheme.

However, as part of the state's new scheme to promote family planning a person is exempt from this rule if he brings to a state-run health centre five people willing to be sterilised.

A landlord who had applied for a gun permit in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri district drugged five of his farm hands and had them forcibly sterilised hoping to avail of the concession, the Indian Express newspaper reported.

The five farm hands from Lakhimpur Kheri were told by their landlord Avtar Singh that they were being taken to the clinic to be inoculated against malaria, The Telegraph newspaper said.

"We were given an injection at the health centre and we lost sense. In the evening, when we were returned home, we could sense a pain in our private parts," said 18-year-old Pappu. Pappu visited a local doctor and learnt to his horror that he had undergone a vasectomy.

Hearing of Pappu's visit to the doctor, Singh reportedly detained all five men in his house for five days and threatened them with dire consequences if they went public.

The five men are aged between 18 and 32. Two are unmarried while three are married with children.

District magistrate S P S Solanki said: "I have ordered a probe and we would take administrative action against health officers involved."

The farmers have been promised that their sterilisation will be reversed at state expense.

"We will take them all to (Uttar Pradesh capital) Lucknow for reversal surgery," said Iqbal Hussein, chief medical officer at Lakhimpur Kheri.

District officials ruled out any action against the landlord, though a complaint has been filed against him at the local police station in Palia village.

The authorities introduced the sterilisation-for-gun licence scheme as an innovative way to promote family planning and control population growth. It has been introduced in three districts so far.

What a great idea.  We should do somethng like that here in America.

Have 5 DU members sterilised and you can get a gun permit.

Sounds good to me.

I don't know about this vasectomy business, but I'll help move 5 liberals out of the country for a gun.

Isn't that what got Indira Gandhi assasinated?   Forced sterlization?

You'd think people would be very careful of that in India.

I would just like to remind everyone that the words scalpel and testicles should never be used in the same sentence.
This has been  public service announcement

i think want to keep democracy the way it is in the us. (it ain't perfect but it's the best damn thing going, think canada/austrailia/briton with no right to self-protection!)--proof of how different versions of "democracy" exists in their region of the world.  i watched a national geo. special where the children of prisoners are kept in jail until they are 4-5(?), and then the kids were just kicked out and left on their own.  a true SHTF life-style!!

I should point out that we do have a right to protect ourselves, however with storage laws the way they are, the only person who mihgt stand a chance at using a firearm without beign charged is a farmer, adn that is because they can keep one loaded to deal with varmints and pests....

Forcing peopel who work for you to be cut so you can get a pistol is just cold though
