On Sunday, August 15, a 16-year-old girl in the town of Neka, northern Iran, was executed. Ateqeh Sahaleh was hanged in public on Simetry Street off Rah Ahan Street at the city center.

The sentence was issued by the head of Neka’s Justice Department and subsequently upheld by the mullahs’ Supreme Court and carried out with the approval of Judiciary Chief Mahmoud Shahroudi.

In her summary trial, the teenage victim did not have any lawyer and efforts by her family to recruit a lawyer was to no avail. Ateqeh personally defended herself. She told the religious judge, Haji Rezaii, that he should punish the main perpetrators of moral corruption not the victims.

The judge personally pursued Ateqeh’s death sentence, beyond all normal procedures and finally gained the approval of the Supreme Court. After her execution Rezai said her punishment was not execution but he had her executed for her “sharp tongue”.

How the hell does a country like Iran survive? It takes an intellectual base to run a country and I'm just not seeing out of Iran, nor the middle east as a whole. How do these guys turn the lights on at night or keep the water running?

For a society that wants to live in the 13th century, they sure use a lot of 21st centrury toys like cel phones and video cameras.

That hadn't occured to me really until now.  I was reading the topic and post and was imagining this Iranian girl with a razor sharp tongue...

It's amazing how those bastards are still stuck in the 13th century. I suppose the fact that they silence free speech and indoctrinate them from birth keeps the cycle going. It's at least nice to see some are trying to break the chains that bind them.

Many middle eastern countries send people here to be educated to do their jobs that require higher learning. And they don't have a lot of modern conveniences in many places like modern sanitation and electricity in some places. Iraq didn't have a sewer system until we liberated it from Sadam.

First thing that came to mind as well.  "Personally"  took charge eh?

Anybody see "Death in Gaza"? All those Judean Palastinian Muslims seem to love dying. All the men are eager to get blown off to paradise, or encourage some dumb kid to do it. The only ones who seem to have any sense are the women, but they have no power to speak, but you can see it in their face. Maybe this girl was trying to tell them that dying for a futile cause is stupid.

Thank God Islam is a Religion of Peace of this could have been far, far worse.
