Doesn't the story of the M16 sound alot similar to something happening right now...?

There is a huge difference between the M-14/M-16 switch and the M-16/XM-8 idea.

Mainly that the troops at the time were handing in a heavy full power battle rifle for a smaller, lighter, more controllable weapon that gave up some power but allowed them to carry more ammunition. It was a step forward in thinking.

The XM-8 transition would require the troops to hand in an M-16 for a weapon that was still 5.56, but was heavier, alllowed for carrying less amunition, and was less effective in combat thanks to a shorter barrel.

Big fargin difference there....

The XM8 is more relieable, lighter, and easier to handle than the M16.  Not to mention the dramatic reduction in cleaning time.  They are cheaper too.  So why wouldn't they want to switch?

M16 = POSAR imho.  (For Military use anyway).
