My carry piece is a Kahr MK9.  The instruction manual (ya I really read it) said to be sure the chamber is empty and pull the trigger when storing.  Hammers on Colt Govt & Browning HP are at rest when in the safe as well.

This is the same as mag springs.  Unless you are in a high humidity environment (stress corrosion cracking), then it doesn't matter.  Sometimes I leave leave em cocked, other times the old habit is too hard to break and I feel the need to lower the hammer.
