I'm not a fan of tater tots, they always seem to have a freezer burn taste to me.  But throw those hashbrown patties and i'd be all over it.

It looks good.

I'd just use 97/3 extra lean ground beef and skip adding extra salt.

That shit by default is going to be salty enough.

Around here, it's only a "hotdish" if it goes to a potluck.  If it stays home, it's a casserole.

If you're gonna break it down by ingredients, it's basically chili fries. Meat, spices, and fried potatoes.

Things get cooked differently, and that makes them different things.

It's called hot dish and it's made like this:

Browned ground beef and onions on the bottom.
Green beans on top of that.
Cream of mushroom soup on top of that.
Tater tots as the top layer.

From wikipedia
A casserole (French: diminutive of casse, from Provençal cassa 'pan'[1]) is a variety of a large, deep pan or bowl used for cooking a variety of dishes in the oven; it is also a category of foods cooked in such a utensil.

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup diced onion
2 garlic cloves, chopped
2 pounds ground beef
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 (12 ounce) jars of beef gravy
2 cups frozen peas and carrots
1 (28 ounce) bag tater tots

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Add the oil to a large skillet over medium heat.
Brown the onions with the garlic for 5 minutes, stirring often until softened.
Add the beef to the skillet, breaking up with a spoon and cooking until no pink remains, about 7-8 minutes.
Drain any grease from the skillet then add the salt, pepper, worcestershire sauce and tomato paste and stir to combine.
Pour in the gravy and stir into the beef mixture.
Bring the beef to a simmer then add the frozen peas and carrots. Stir to combine with the filling and to defrost slightly.
Pour the filling into a 9? x 13? casserole dish that’s been sprayed with cooking spray.
Add the frozen tater tots on top of the beef filling, arranging in a single layer.
Bake for 35 minutes until the tater tots are golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

Swapping the tater tots for frozen shredded hash browns will cut some salt.

I could DIY my own beef gravy from home-made salt free stock and a simple roux.

DH has hypertension so I have learned to make low/no salt versions of these dishes.

Pretty much,
Its even better if you use the mini tots, cause they get crisper, and about 5 minutes before its duento.fome out, throw on 3 cups of extra sharp cheddar and hit it with the broiler

I'm seriously craving some old high school comfort food right now. Tater Tot Hotdish day was a sacred day. That and sheet pan pizza, buttered rotini, chicken nuggets...

Damn, I'm getting the nostalgia bug. I might have to make some noodles with ketchup, just for the hell of it.

My wife's go-to simple comfort food is bowl of elbow noodles, Hunts tomato sauce, a pat of butter melted in there, with a bit of romano cheese sprinkled on top.  Her grandma used to make it for her when she was a kid.

Good stuff!
