I know it isn't exactly the most consistent ammo but is it all underpowered like their .223 cal is?  In other words does their 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 rounds come close to spec or are they underpowered as well?

I've never any problem with 7.62x39 being weak.

IIRC 7.92 Kurtz has similar ballistics to 7.62x39 but uses a smaller case.

I tend to think that it's just that the Russians don't have the same quality of powder. Their 7.62x39 isn't underpowered because it's built to their specs.

Their 148gr 7.62*54R seems as strong as legitimate Soviet milsurp.

I find their 7.62*39 to be slightly underpowered.  I have a defective AK (NMH 91) that tends to short stroke with Wolf, but doesn't do it with Barnaul.  Note that this could mean that Barnaul is hot as opposed to Wolf being under strength, my other 7.62*39s function well with Wolf...

You will also find that barnaul's 5.56mm is not underpowered either.

it's not just the power issue, the bullet itself (as opposed to the cartridge) isn't the same.

ie:  it ain't M193 and won't perform the same.

I hope that no one on this board is using Wolf, Barnul or any of the other "quality" Russkie ammo for SHTF or personal defense purposes.

Well what else are you going to spray your AK with?

Preium Brass cased ammo that $200 if not more for a case

The .223 seems underloaded.  It seemed to me that it recoiled less than Q3131A or Sellier & Bellot... also it has very little flame out of my postban 16" whereas the other two rounds mentioned create nice big (ok huge) fireballs.

We have chrono'ed Wolf 62 grain 223 and it is actually slighly over velocity for SS109 62 gr.  The 55 grain is under powered, and it appears that the Russkies used the same powder charge with both bullets.  Ops

Bernaul and others are re-sold cheap. Wolf is made cheap. Neither the accuracy nor the charge of Bernaul, Uly, etc..  Just the Polymer case, which I hope the other brands adopt!
