I was on a WestPac MEU aboard the New Orleans with two birds detached from HML-367 on Okinawa. Everything was awesome from the typhoons at sea to the incredible heat and humidity while docked in the P.I. to the freezing cold while in the field of S. Korea for war games. |

Deployed with an 0311 that said he hated being stationed in Hawaii. He was a little weird but single and no commitments. He said after a while he did everything the islands offered and he felt trapped. Expensive and time consuming to fly back to the states to visit parents. I gave him a

Two years later he moved back to California. Still owns the house as a rental property. It is called Island Fever and it will screw you up. Guy finally resorted to boat trips to various islands, visited most of the islands. It did not help. |

Okinawa in the early 80s when most Marines were sent there on one year unaccompanied tours.
It was actually one of the most professionally rewarding periods in my career. I came back to the states to get served divorce papers. That was pretty rewarding as well. |

Took about two weeks for me to get right. Ended up being the best place I've ever been stationed. It was the people, really...and a good change of seasons. I'm all about guns, cars, and redneck hooplah...Turns out, so is Oklahoma. Without a doubt, the nicest people I've met in the United States. |

Deployment to Kosovo...
Although I volunteered for deployment, when I got moved to another camp to share a tin box in the frozen mud with two other chicks w/reduced freedom I thought it was gonna suck - but ended up loving it!!! Best time ever!!! I enjoyed running and being chased by wild dogs, freezing cold, cold showers...funny how you learn to appreciate the little things like reading a lot, having chow with others, working out 10x a day...burning trash

I thought Mayport was going to suck. Turns out it was damn near paradise... all small ships except for a single 1200 lb steam cruiser. I imagine things have changed since they homeported a CVN there.

I got to spend four months TDY there during the dry season. Hard to beat the beaches, food and cheap Cerveza Panama. We stayed in apartments on the Pacific side (Curundu).. with an empanada and juice vendor every morning to quell the hangovers. My two and a half years in Italy were "ok" too, 5 minutes from the beach. I had a pretty easy going 4 years of active Army |

I got sent from Germany to Ft. Polk, thought I was gonna hate it, but loved it.
I was never a barracks rat, so I was gone almost every weekend. I was on the post Rugby team so were were TDY almost constantly to mostly cities in TX but a few in LA as well. Found a hunting club in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of redneck coonasses and I fit right in. It helped that a bunch of guys from my unit in Germany got sent there as well. The guy I was room mates with in reception at Ft Knox ended up being my last room mate at Ft Polk. We had some good times. |

Actually liked Ft. Polk (85-87). I had a dual sport bike and maps of the whole place, spent a lot of time off-road and had a blast.
Back then everybody wasn't always looking over their shoulder for a terrorist and you could go most anywhere. Open post, I'm sure we'll never see that again. Made several trips to New Orleans, Houston, Galveston. Camp Casey was ok as well (87-88). |

That one week in Jacksonville was glorious though, because AF eats like kings. It turned out to be a great assignment. Arkansas is a beautiful state and we were OPFOR for the original JRTC. JRTC didn’t move to Ft. Polk until late ‘92. The locals weren’t all right in the head, but for the most part they were really good to us. We were Airborne and there were plenty of C-130s at LRAFB to keep us jumping, plus we’d task visiting units with providing helicopters for jumps, especially when the 101st rotated through because they’d bring a sh*t-load of copters. I went back a couple of years ago, was able to get into my barracks.
