Used to work with some Irish folks at Allied Irish Bank in NYC. They would always say, "oh we're definitely having the crack tonight." It means having fun.

Well, i ask because i have to go to Tralee.  Last time my girlfriend went there; people would gather around her and make her talk.  They'd say things like : "She talks like shes in the Movies".  People would stop to hear her talk.

Said it was surreal.

Thinking of bringing a Cowboy hat and spurs when i go to the pub; and say things with my best John Wayne accent:  "What does a Yank have to do to get a cold one ? "

This is a good question.  I meet 2 guys that were fresh from Kilkenny in Toronto , they had come to find work.
We were both in the bar drinking and I could barely understand there accents . Guinness solved that . We both understood that.

I can understand Irish speaking English but Scots seem to be speaking an entirely different language.

The only language more indecipherable than Gaelic is Welsh.

For fuck's sake, I'll loan you $250 to buy a vowel once in a while.

The government and documentaries will tell you a form of Gaelic but if you are in an area where they speak it from birth as a first language they always correct me and say it is called Irish.

So Irish and English.

Now Scotland has Gaelic, English, and a third dialect of English that I have heard several linguist argue is technically another language called Scottish.

I didn't have any trouble communicating with people in the cities or tourist areas.

I imagine its the same as the US. You get in certain areas and the local dialect changes.

I've run across old hilljacks around here that I had a tough time understanding
