This is only part of the "Hollywood effect" for all pols. I was at an fbo when Bob Dole arrived in Chicago for a rally when he was running and saw the same thing. There was myself, one other guy and two camera crews watching as he waved from the top of the stairs from his 757 to all 'the assembled fan's'.
Back then the winners and losers had the sense of decency to resign from their position before running for the top job! Not so now! How is it possible to have a "full time job" in congress and spend two years running for President? (I did get a chance to piss on Oprah's' GIV #1 wheel and tire at that hanger. so it was all good!)
