@chopinbloc tests .45-70 HSM 430gr +P RNFP in ballistic gelatin.
 A Beast of a Cartridge! .45-70 HSM 430gr +P RNFP Gel Test .45-70 is a complete beast of a cartridge. It chucks huge metal, hauling ass like a madman. This is a cartridge from the frontier days of the American West when men were men and women, well, they were men too. .45-70 is so named because it fires a bullet that's 45 100ths of an inch from a case containing 70 grains of black powder. To add a little perspective, the .45 Colt originally used 28 grains of black powder. To say that .45-70 was already an impressively powerful cartridge back then is an understatement. But this load is a modern load, using smokeless powder, and designed for guns made with modern metallurgical techniques. Being a plus P, this load is on the bleeding edge of what's even safely possible for .45-70. And that's saying an awful lot. The test gun is a Marlin Model 1895 trapper. |

A friend and his uncle went on a modern “Buffalo hunt.”
- friend used an original 45-60 (yes, 60, not 70) with a heavy cast lead bullet like in the video - his uncle used a 30-06 with premium bonded heavy hunting bullets The buffalo shot with 30-06 kept grazing after the 1st shot - as if nothing happened. Same for 2nd shot. Following the 3rd shot, it slowly went down, as if to take a nap - and died. All 3 shots were well placed into the heart-lung zone and bullets expqnded perfectly. When the 400+ grain 45-60 bullet struck it’s buffalo, the bull lept a foot straight into the air like a startled cat, came down and collapsed in a heap, kicked once, and died right away. It also snorted out about a gallon of blood as it hit the ground. There’s obviously good reason buffalo hunters often used 45-70 and 45-60. Edit: I think the 110 loadings mostly just bought them extra range - as herds ran off over the prairie. |

That's a lot of energy. Did I read correctly in the video that the speeds varied 257fps across rounds or were those different rounds tested? I couldn't really tell.

The whole $80 for 20 buffalo bore cartridges is almost as unpleasant as the recoil on mine.

BTW - my friends Dakota buffalo “hunt” was kind of anti-climactic:
- they essentially met the rancher they arranged the hunt with - who drove them close to his heard in his pickup - and when they were ready, the rancher simply pointed out the selected animal and said: “shoot that one.” There wasn’t any real “hunting” to it.

I have cousins that will not under any circumstances shoot my 45-70 or 10 gauge.
I let them try some buffalo bore rounds.
I have no problems shooting 20 or more rounds at a time. |

.45-70s seem to reproduce if left alone in the safe... bought one a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun.
A few months later I owned 3... an antique 1895 made in 1895 according to Marlin, the aforementioned modern 1895G and a ruskie double rifle. .45-70 is like a light switch for deer. It sucks at long range, but where I hunt shots over 100m are rare... so the drop isn't too bad at that range. I'd love to find a Ruger No.1 in .45-70 to have a strong action to load 'heavy' on.
And of my guns, not a single factory round has passed through em in my hands... bought Starline virgin brass and have been enjoying a simple to load rifle round. |

I have shot mine a lot over the last couple months that I've owned it. 20rnds of factory federal ammo, the other 200 or so have been reloads using various 405gr cast bullets.

What's gonna' hurt worse?
The 45-70 round or those fuckin' bear claws tenderizing your face into edible bite size chunks? That guy has at least 100lbs more impact absorbing meat than me and he was grinding molars when he was pullin' that trigger! Must be a 'stout' round. Wonder if a bit more barrel length would ease up some of that felt recoil? |

Recoil didn't look to bad. I dunno about that big loop. The regular loop seems ok. I would be impressed to see him shoot it from a guide gun with the stock waffle pad
45/70 and 45 Colt all you need for the deep woods. |

I used Garret loads in my .45-70 Guide Gun while I was in Alaska. I have decided I don't need that level of recoil anymore.
I load a 300 grain LFP over 44.1 of RL-7 that kills FL hogs and deer-and NOT my shoulder- just fine. Those loads in the OP? No fucking way, bear or no bear. |

No fucking way, bear or no bear. 45-70 definitely is impactful from a bench, but standing shots aren't that bad. I've gone through a box of Garrett at the range only stopping because of cost. It's a slow powerful push but it's not punishing. @AeroEngineer and I shot a fuck ton a few months ago and neither of us were bitching, and it was his first time. I think notable stuff about the cartridge is muzzle flash with some of the light fast rounds |
