I thought I saw/heard something in the garage the other day, my wife has too on a couple other occasions... We looked around and found rat droppings, chewed up stuff (little bugger ate my grass seed!!) etc.  So I set a trap at 7:00PM, went and checked it at 10:30 and the greedy little guy already met his fate.  His teeth were still clamped down on the cheese.  By the way in case you haven't seen one, that "Rat Trap" is the size of 4 regular mouse traps.

P.S. I am assuming this is some kind of rat, if someone else knows exactly what it is, let me know.

P.P.S. You can't tell from the pic, but the poor little guy crapped himself.  He had poop hanging out of his rat bottom.  Thought you guys would like to know that .

You can't set traps in the state of Washington!
You can expect the JBT's to kick in your front door very soon.

Spring-loaded traps, such as those used for moles and gophers, and connibear traps used for mountain beaver, are instant kill body-gripping traps that are prohibited by I-713

This quote has been heavily edited for content:

I would hope that many of us here feel pity for such senseless killing of such a magnificient animal.

Ar15 and other non-politically correct gun (ak47, fnfal, etc) owners tend to be far more vocal about gun rights, hunting, self defense etc. I am proud to be a member of this community and the stance on these issues. But often, I wondered about frequent extremist views about life/death/killing/war etc that unfortunately darkens many discussions.

I certainly hope that pity is a common reaction to viewing this photograph as I believe humanity will not survive if such cruelty and such trivial view of life becomes more commonplace. Respect for God's creatures starts with animals and is ultimately reflected on how we treat each other.

I believe that to take a life should serve purpose higher than vanity and hubris.

The point of this outrage is not in simple reason and pragmatism. Maybe it is true that such slaughters in some way contribute in contolling rat populations. But as humans, we must balance our morals/ethics against practical outcomes. Black and white pragmatism with little regard to ethics brought unspeakable cruelty to the physically and mentally disabled during Hitler's reign. The idea of eliminating vermin to create a superior  ratless society is  a noble goal. The methods used to accomplish that goal was horrific.
I think what many of us are trying to say is that there must be a better way to ensure the health and safety of humans AND rats, if not then we are failing our duties as the master species.

Oh,   I second (or third) the notion that you should put out more traps to get the others.    Even if there are no others, you will kill the newcomers before they eat all your goods and poop everywhere.

I HATE rats.

In 1970, early in my Navy career, I was standing OOD inport on the forenoon watch in my destroyer in Boston Harbor.  It had snowed the night before.  While we were in the shipyard, our usual quarterdeck was unusable so we were operating from the foc'sle for a few days.

Suddenly, the petty officer of the watch noticed a large (Norway) wharf rat climbing up the number two mooring line.  Unfortunately for Mr. Rat, the ratguard prevented him from joining our crew.  Undaunted, Rat turns and clambers down the line to the dock, calmly walks over to the brow and commences to walk aboard, just ballsy as you please!  When he was about 1/2 way up the long brow, the POOW asked me if he should draw his .45 and shoot the bastard...to which I, realizing the incredible paperwork and certain disciplinary problems that would ensue when I tried to explain the unauthorized discharge of a firearm in the shipyard, the loss of a round of ammo...and finally the incredible but true rat story...demurred and told my POOW NOT to fire.  I had the messenger of the watch grab his broom and shoo the rat back down the brow.  The rat left...but NOT without a fight.

Years later, while serving in a guided missile destroyer in Pearl Harbor,  we had signs of vermin infestation...rats living aboard.

A cardinal rule was that NO food could be brought into the berthing compartments.  One night while making my inspection rounds as the Command Duty Officer, I happened into the pigsty that the boilermen and machinists called their crib.  As usual, it was filthy...but this time, especially so, with pizza remnants and crushed soda cans everywhere.  I rousted the duty engineer and had him make the engineers hold field day.  At around midnight, I re-checked the compartment and declared it fit for occupation again and they turned in.  When I made my report to the XO next morning, I mentioned the mess and he told me that the chief corpsman was going rat hunting because he had seen signs of rat infestation...and that the engineering berthing compartment was a prime target.  That day the Doc set his traps and in less than 24 hours, he had a GIANT rat.  The engineers were pissed!  Turns out they knew the rat was aboard and they were leaving scraps out for it.  It had built a nest up above the A/C ducting down in their berthing compartment!  [puke]

It looks like a roof rat. In any case always keep your traps set as there will be more out there.  There are an estimated 150 million rats in the U.S. Peanut butter is probably the best bait to use.

Roof Rat:

Size: Roof rat (black rat, ship rat) adult head+body length is 6-8 in (16-20 cm); tail length is 7-10 in (19-25 cm); weight is about 5-9 ounces, up to 12 ounces.

Characteristics: Soft, smooth fur; pointed muzzle; large eyes; large, almost naked ears which can be pulled over the eyes. Scaly, dark tail is longer than combined head+body length.

Color: Brown with black mixed in, to gray, to black on top with white; gray or black underside.

Droppings: Adult droppings are up to 1/2 in (12.5 mm) long, and are spindle shaped with pointed ends.

Norway Rat:

Size: Norway rat adult's head+body length is about 7-9 in (18-25 cm); tail length is 6-8 in (15-21 cm); weight is 7-18 ounces, up to 20.5 ounces.

Characteristics: Heavy body; coarse, shaggy fur; blunt muzzle, small eyes, small ears with dense short hairs; scaly, 2-colored tail, which is darker on top, and is shorter than the length of its head+body.

Color: Norway rats are brown with scattered black hairs, gray to yellow-white on underside.

Droppings: Adult droppings are up to 3/4 in (20mm) long, capsule shaped with blunt ends.

Besides catching the remaining Rat Bastards, you need to find out what is attracting them and remove it.  If someone in your house is dumping the crap from the cat's litter box in your yard, that's the first practice that must cease - your putting out rat candy.

If you have a cat, it should be severly disciplined for falling down on its duties.

Black Norwegian, Rattus Rattus is what I learned in school, lo these many years ago.

Rats are more wide ranging than mice, this may have been the only one.  Set more traps, though.  Peanut buter works better than cheese.
Bacon works very well, but you can break a cat or dog's nose that way.

That, my friend, is a member of the highly sought after 'dead rat' family. Latin name is 'deadass ratus' I believe. The 'Dead Rat' are more preferred by humans than their very closely related cousins 'Ratus Still Aliveus'. The two families are only seperated in difference of mobility and ability to inhale oxygen and destroy property valued by humans. NOTE: both 'deadass ratus' and 'ratus still aliveus' are nasty and known for spreading disease.

We went with steel traps chained to something heavy before we could catch and recover the Rats and traps.
