Just got rid of my paid off car and took on a debt of $10k.

Paid off car was a 95 Thunderbird V8. Trouble free the whole time I owned it. Now I have a 97 Lincoln Mark VIII. No problems so far.

I have never made a single "time" car payment; I have always paid cash. I don't drive the nicest, but it's nice to own it.

I didn't have the luxury of dropping 30k in all at once. The good part is that my old company paid for 3 years worth of payments and insurance as a perk. [:D]

Don't own a damned one. All 4 are owned by the credit union and bank until 2008. Combined payments are more than my g/f's mortgage payment. But I'm not getting any younger...

Having your car paid for doesn't mean you truely own it. Same w/your house.

Allodial Title for American's Property

In the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American Revolutionary war, the American people were given their lands in "Allodial Title". What this means is that we then owned all the property in this country free and clear.

Allodial - "Free; not holden of any lord or superior; owned without obligation of vassalage or fealty; the opposite of feudal."

What these means to the average American is that, at some point, our government has returned us to the feudal system of land ownership. Now we "owe" an obligation to our government to pay taxes on the property that we "should" own in allodial title. Not only is this land, but also every possession we have including our houses, our cars and everything else we think we own.

I make one low low monthly payment of $00000.00
for my Jeep. Leasing a car is baaaaaaaaaaaad!!!
Unless you can write it off for a business, you are better off buying an older vehicle.
I refuse to make payments!
But I know thats not an option often times.

My 3 cars cost me about 3500.

87 Mistu Montero 4x4 1,000 plus a new head 400
79 Jeep Wagoneer 4x4 500(engine work done by me-400)
86 Dodge Ram pick-up 2x2 1200

I would drive either of them cross country right now.

2 more payments to go on my '98 ranger, 5 more on the wifes' pathfinder. between them, that will free up about $670 a month to knock down some other bills. i'm determined to drive mine right into the ground. it will be awhile till i take on payments again.
i don't come from money. noone is going to leave me any money. i make good regular-man money,but i still usually live check to check. someday, things will be different, but for major purchases, i'll always be doing the payment thing.

I havent had a car payment in over 15 years.
Dont spend the car payment !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just put in the bank and you will never miss it. Then when the car you are driving now needs to be replaced use it to buy the replacement.

The wife is asking about replacing her car with a new VW passat. Thats going to hurt the old check book if we pay cash. I dont know what I am going to do but I sure do hate car payments.

I own three old POS vehicles. When driving old crappy cars, you need more than one due to reliability concerns. I have the luxury of having a company vehicle for work so commuting isn't an issue (they even pay for gas!). Because I don't make car payments I have a killer home theater, tons-o-guns(including an inbound RR SP1/M16), a nice house (making payments on that though), and now that I've given up on drag racing, a decent retirement account. However, I may end up buying something at least newish since I'm also sick of working on POS cars and trucks. Just haven't decided what I want and how to accumulate the needed funds (hard to stop buying gun stuff ya know...). Thinking about a 2 year old (or so) Dodge diesel 4x4.

I own mine. '88 Buick Park Avenue. It doesn't look like much (not the best, but not the worst) but it starts every morning, runs great, and doesn't leave me stranded on the side of the road.

But then again, I only paid 100 bucks for it, put about $150 more in junkyard headlight, new brakes, and changed oil and it was good to go.

Not to shaby for my first car if I do say so myself [:D]

I pay Ford for mine every month. Pay Harley for the bike too.

However, for the truck, at 2.9%, being that it's about the same as inflation, it's really like paying up front but still getting to have the money.

50/50, the Wrangler and the Dodge CTD are paid off the Cherokee and work van we still owe on but both of those should be paid off this coming year. Cars are gettin like guns I never want to get rid of any of em. Actually If I could figure a way to squeeze the Cummins engine/drivetrain into the van and junk the truck I'd be really set.

This is my thinking as well. Or use it to help pay off other debts quickly. Thing is-- usually if you could survive making the payment, then you can survive saving it instead of spending it...

Thanks for starting this thread, cause it gives me a chance to post my 2004 new years resoloution: To pay off my wifes 2002 Malibu.
After that, we are not buying a new car again.

I have my Suburban down to 3500.00 owed. That will be paid off in a couple months. After being poor a good part of my life, I feel uncomfortable owing money to anybody. The only thing I would take out another loan for will be when I buy my acreage. Even then, most of it will be paid for up front.

I noticed that there are a disporportionate amount of non payment guys posting here. That shows that we are consrvative in our finances, as well as our politics. If only our government could be so wise.

My parents have always paid for their new cars with cash that was saved, even if it meant waiting several years until they had enough to get a new one. My cars are hand-me-downs, so old they're probably depreciating by only pennies a day.[:D]

I used to buy cars with cash. As I got older I found the autos I wanted were costing more and more cash. Two cars ago was the last one I bought outright, then the '00 Monte Carlo and now the '02 Jeep Liberty.

I work [s]everyday[/s] [s]most of the time[/s], ok I have a job, so I wanted a new car once in this lifetime. I got it. 3.5 miles the day I dropped my big ass in it.

I havent decided whether it stays or goes, if it keeps going like it has been I will keep her and pay her off. Like someone else said, when the rate is right, it covers inflation so its a time payment with no penalty.
