LOL

RATS is a joke to many people.

Maybe, maybe for pediatric cases...but even then...

Since this will inevitably turn into a tourniquet thread and the associated dick measuring contest, has anyone used the TMT? It’s one of the ones that I haven’t gotten my hands on yet but just learned about them...

Rats are junk and CATs have been proven effective not only in testing but also in real world scenarios.

Lots of people alive today thanks to CATs.

Easy to use. Easy to train. Easy to maintain.

Don’t waste your time with anything else unless you plan on getting advanced medical training. (I’m referring to the SOF-T. Another great tourniquet...just not as commonly used.)

Don't care.

Jeff Kirkham is a good guy. Former SF too. Don't blame him for pimping his product.

I think I'll buy a couple of RATS for my bag.

I'm not an expert, but here goes...

RATS applies pressure over a very narrow area (the width of the string) and relies on the user to correctly stack it and apply enough force while wrapping it around the limb to spread the pressure out over the artery and stop bleeding.

The CAT and SOFTT both apply pressure over a much wider area (the width of the strap) which is better for both occlusion of blood flow and preventing nerve and tissue damage. They also don't require the user to wrap them around the limb numerous times, decreasing the chance of making a mistake when putting it on. They're faster and easier to use correctly, which is what you want when seconds count.

I've been a paramedic for 10 years now. I have used a lot of tourniquets on people. The CAT and SOFTT are the only tourniquets I would use. If you're buying today, get the CAT gen7 or the SOFTT-Wide.

Every tourniquet failure I have seen is a result of failing to tighten the constricting band enough on initial application (before the windlass is ever touched).

I don't see how you could get the RATS tight enough if you were applying it to yourself. On someone else, sure, but I'm not sure how easy it would be.

I put a CAT on someone last Tuesday. They work.

P.S. be careful with circular saws

I carry a TK4 (back pocket don’t have the room for a full size TQ like CATS), in my chest rig and IFAKs I use CATS TQ.

Lmao the rats is a garbage meme level “tourniquet”. There’s no shortage of garbage fucking products marketed to basement dwellers and airsofters who then try to pass it their garbage off as a real product.

I prefer the soft T wide, but I’ve seen saves from a Cat too.

No. You can't easily (I won't say absolutely can't,
because anything is possible) tighten the RATS enough.

The issue is simple, consistent application.

Dang, son...did your momma invent the CAT or something? You seem to be taking this awfully personally.

Seriously, go check out the Readyman YouTube channel, watch a few videos, then come back and see if you can say one nice thing about Jeff Kirkham.

Thanks for clarifying. I've never had to use a tourniquet but I've been to several classes and the instructors didn't waste too much time on the RATS or SWAT other than to say not to bother with them. I'll just flip on my right turn signal and get back in my lane now.

@Exp44

I don't mind the contribution. You're thinking about it, that means you're engaged. And the fact that you're willing to consider things other than the way you feel is good.

Wrong feels right when you don't know you're wrong.

That's the thing about evidence-based medicine (and not the website shown above, LOL), it means that you go where the evidence leads.

The CAT has plenty of evidence to support it's use, and at some point lay people don't need exposure to all the different types of tourniquets out there. Pick a good one that's easy to use and train them on it. Boom, done.

As mentioned repeatedly, RATS are a fucking joke. CATs and SOF-Ts are what you want. But what would I know.

This. BP cuffs work on kids. They don't have the mass adults do, arteries are easier to compress via direct pressure with a roll of kerlix and a BP cuff. Or just use the cuff as the TQ.
