Ok fellas, here it is. This is a doe whitetail taken in Kimble County, Texas on December 15. I shot it with a Ruger M77 .308 at a distance of 150 yards. I waited until the deer was looking straight at me to take the shot.

Look in the upper left corner of Pic #1. What looks like a rock is actually the tip of my dirty Reebock. I am holding an umbrella. I am opening and closing it rapidly. I had no invovement with this shooting.

That's the best way to kill a deer. There's no lactic acid in the muscles, so the meat remains tender and not so gamey.

A deer with a jaw shot off that starves to death isn't good either.

When someone wins money at a casino they tell people, when they lose they don't. People don't talk about shots that wound, just killin' ones.

Use head shots with caution. Some people can take them because they are practiced, others shouldn't.

I know you mean well by taking a headshot, but it is not 'good' shot to take. Many deer suffer each year from being shot in the jaw/mouth.

It is nice that you made the shot, but it is not something that most hunters should consider trying.

Besides, how are you going to have scrambled eggs and brain chili for breakfast now?

I was aiming at the eye, as it had its head slightly turned to the right as it faced me. If it would have been look stright at me I would have shot it between the eyes. Normally, the head shots are while the deer's head is down and it is eating; however, on Monday I got a rare chance to get it as it had its head up and looking in my general direction.

I wish I was a Marine! I tried to enlist in 1998, but was rejected because they found out I have asthma. My dad was a Marine from 66-70 and served in Vietnam with Kilo Company 3/9 June 1967-June 1968. He tought me everything I know about weapons and shooting. I began shooting at age 4 and got my first rifle, a Mini-14, at age 8.

Nice shot. I wouldn't have taken it for the reasons TRG stated, but that's just me. The best part is that all of the meat is intact, except the brains...[lol]. You will just have to find something else that is friggin disgusting to eat with your eggs.

I'm in the same boat. I guess if I ever was going to shoot a deer, I'd be muttering "Hold still, dammit!" until it walked off into the woods. Their heads do tend to jerk around suddenly, especially if they're slightly spooked. I'd probably go for the heart shot, if only because you've got a little bigger 'kill box', and if she's walking, I'd want all the margin of error I could get.

I'd probably be tempted to whistle just before I fired to see if it froze and stared at me so I could have a stationary target. [:)]

Does that really work, or do they just bolt?

Nice shot! Also nice to see something like this after watching several clips from hunting videos during a recent Bass Pro Shops visit....the worste one was an archery bear hunt where this jackoff shot the bear twice at over 75 yards in the gut...desperation shot. The bear ran off and the jackoff and his guide decided that it was getting too dark to track him (aka - they never found him) and the film ended after that....no interview or pics of the skilled hunter with his kill...pissed me off.

edited to add:

I shot a squirrel like that once (.22 about 15 yards)...facing down and siluetted on a pine tree trunk. When I shot I thought I missed cuz I saw what looked like bark fly off the tree and he never moved...then I saw my friend's face and heard several "holy $hits" from him. I actually emptied his cranium and the bark I thought I saw was brain matter. We had to throw sticks at him to knock him down...his claws were dug into the soft pine bark.

No pics, but I killed a doe this morning with my Olympic Arms PCR-16.

I used remington 55gr. soft points and made the shot at a measured 76 yards. One shot to the neck and the deer dropped where it was standing.

This is the third deer I have killed in my (late start)hunting career. All of my deer have been killed with 55gr soft points, two with a 22-250 and today's with my AR.

I'd like to say congrats to EagleArmsHBAR because a 150 yard head shot on a deer is a good shot regardless of what you think about them.

I don't take head shots (unless they're squirrels or rabbits!) for the reasons stated before, but to EagleAmsHBAR's credit, he did state that he waited for the doe to be looking at him before he took the shot. Now, if he meant that the doe was standing directly facing him, it seems to me that any shot that went low would hit vital neck areas, any high shot would miss the deer and any shot slightly off to the left or right would still cause inflict enough of a THUMP to put the deer down.

The deer was eating with her head down and she was walking slowly when I decidedd I was going to kill her. So I yelled "HEY!" that got her to stop walking and look in my direction while standing completly still. I then took the shot and hit right where I was aiming.

I took a head shot at a deer once (30 yards, 220 swift) the shot went in right at the back of its jaw. (It was looking away from me) and blew its whole bottom jaw off and part of its nose and top jaw. It did a flip and hit the ground. It then tried to run when I walked up to it. That was the worst feeling I ever had hunting! I ended up cutting its throat.

I will never try another head shot. 1" left would have dropped it dead, 1" right would have ran off with starvation in its future. I go for the big chest area now, too many deer around to hunt to risk injuring one. I also hunt with a .308 now (More energy)

OK not to beat the JFK angle to death, but you know what's funny, how there are so many comments about "NOT" taking a headshot, because you might miss and just blow the jaw off. This is on a deer standing relatively still. With a good rifle and scope (hopefully!) But supposedly JFK was killed by headshot while moving with a POS rifle.

IMHO,seems like a head shot on a deer at 150 yds.with a well sighted rifle in the hands of an experienced shooter and with the deer somewhat motionless is quite do-able.Nice shot!when you can do it....it's NOT BRAGGING.150 yds actually is pretty close with a scoped rifle.Now.....300 or 400 yds.Damn that seems doable too,for a man to whom shooting is a way of life.

Not to hi-jack the deer kill thread, but I have been to the book depository, and the Oswald shot was a fairly easy one. The targer was moving almost directly away, so little relative movement.
