"Shooting a cannon, and a full auto"
S.O. sent out a deputy, and he pulled about 400 feet back into the property on my drive. I am shooting suppressed when I hear the blips from his siren. I hop in the SxS and head up there, sure enough there is the cruiser. Tells me the neighbor (points) has complained that I am shooting a full auto, and some type of cannon. Yes. Yes I am. I point to a 8" barreled FAL and other toys in the SxS He laughs and says yeah thats probably it. Tells me if it was his property, he would keep right on having fun. I am done for the day anyway. He asks if my range is safe, I show him, all is well. How do you guys handle this? I have 4 neighbors within a half mile. All but one shoots all the time. Whats expected of this in the future? Land is out in the county as much as it can be. |

I’ve had the same issue. Deputies have been out 4 times, and had no issues with my range or backstop. One did say that some of their officers are not gun guys, and may be dicks, but that I’m completely legal.
All from one elderly neighbor, 1/4 mile away. She actually walked to my house once to complain in person, and was met with a not so nice response to her yelling. Haven’t had an issue since. |
Just keep doing what you are doing. He will get tired of calling LE, and they will get tired of him calling them. It will work itself out.
Sorry, all I read through that was “who wants to come over for a range day? Bring tannerite”
Hopefully the officer went back to complaining neighbor and explained that it is legal for you to shoot FA weapons and cannons.
OP ahould have asked the deputy to wan the neighbor about the punishments for false reports.
Invite the neighbor who called to come shoot.
Be considerate about when you shoot. At that point you've done over and above. |
Call the cops on me for enjoying my property and you destroy any chance at receiving my good will. Come to me first and maybe we can work something out.
Keep on keeping on. |

Swat team, cuffs, and “had to shoot the dog, your poodle looked at me”

Tell me more about this - I want to hear your experience. I dont need a war every time I want to shoot - thats why I bought the place to start with

If so you should write an angry letter to neighbor cc: sheriff.
1) full auto is still legal. If you hear it outside the context of a bank robbery or high-crime area, the shooter is probably one of the most upstanding and law abiding individual you will ever meet. 2) calling the cops when you hear FA in this context based on the assumption that it is probably illegal is like calling the cops when you see a minority driving a car that is “too nice” because “it is probably stolen” - both actions the result of ignorance and bigotry. |

The guy who called the cops on me shooting also shoots and was a Dekalb county cop in the past. He was concerned about the machine guns.

Happened to me, I told the state police to tell the neighbor im within my rights and was doing mag dumps the whole time they went back to talk to them.
Damn near every time. Especially if more than jus me or if I shoot S.B.R. Unsuppressed.
50 acres range 5000 yrds. From neighbor who complains |
I've had similar happen to me. My closest neighbor is probably 1/2 mile from me, they called the county on me one day when I was out shooting. The deputy that came out went to their house to take the complaint and told them I was within my rights and there was nothing they could do about it. He came and checked out my layout, saw it was safe and left.
It kind of chapped me that they called the SO about it and didn't just call me, we were not on bad terms. I went to talk with him about it, come to find out he didn't have my cell, had tried calling my house (obviously I was outside) and was working 3rd shift at the time and trying to sleep. I have three neighbors close enough to hear me when I'm shooting, now I try to touch base with them if I'm going to be doing anything more than stepping out to fire a few rounds. |

Time to build that 7.5” .308 pistol with a binary trigger and magpul drum
Buy more ammo and keep on squeezing that trigger. Enjoy your property.
Go to neighbors house to talk. Act very sorry and use a conciliatory approach. Mid convo ask neighbor if you can use the restroom. Leave and upper decker in the toilet and go home.
We get these calls all the time. If you are in the Twp, and the range is safe, that's all we care about. Show me your backstop and rounds are not zinging off your property and I'll be on my way.

This is like the dickwads who move next door to a gun club and then complain about noise. Those busybody neighbors need to move to their big city socialist utopia or shut the fuck up. Let’s see: free state, lots of open countryside and...gun noise!?!? You’re damn right there is gun noise!
I would be SOOOO pissed if my neighbor was shooting full auto.
You know what to do have a Get together we will all come out and have a fun afternoon shooting

This is simple legally, but tough socially. I've noticed even in Hickok45 videos that his neighbours (or passing vehicles) sometimes get a bit testy about the noise.
The noise can't be that bad at 1/4 mile though. That's about the distance from my club's buildings to the rifle range, and much of the sound attenuates to normal 'distant gunfire' levels. Maybe invite them for dinner and a session on the range? |
I'm courteous to my neighbors as far as not shooting too late at night or in the morning & making sure horses/live stock don't knock down a fence because of the noise.
But.... when push comes to shove until they hand me a check to buy my property I'll pretty much do what I want. |
I hate to have to tell you this OP, but...
...you have a cunt for a neighbor. |
What it sounds like to me is you have a neighbor that had no clue owning certain types of firearms is legal.
And since you were not hauled away in irons they will probably just let this go. Sure it's aggravating having the police come out but it probably won't happen again and even if it does if you are legit no problems. |
New neighbor called them to my place once when I had friends over playing with NFA toys. Deputy told them it was private property and unless we were doing something unsafe, they were just SOL. He then came down and hung out and shot with us for a few minutes until he had to answer another call.
