Trucker gets 6-month sentence for crash that killed trooper
By LINDA MAN
The Kansas City Star

A truck driver, whose vehicle caused a fiery crash that killed a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper in May, was sentenced today to six months in jail and a $500 fine.<

Paul Daniel, of New Hampton, Mo., was sentenced for four traffic misdemeanors -- failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, failure to operate in a single lane, having no valid commercial license and careless and imprudent driving -- for a wreck on eastbound Interstate 70 near Higginsville. The wreck killed Trooper Michael Newton and severely injured Leawood resident Michael Nolte.

Daniel told authorities after the wreck that he wanted to stretch his knees that morning. As he was getting ready to stop, he leaned over to grab his sunglasses from the dashboard because the sun was blinding him. When he could see again, he “was in the back of the patrol car.”

So, in Missouri, apparently you can operate a commercial truck without a valid license, drive with your head up your ass, kill and maim, all for the low, low price of $500. Nice. Of course, if you dare carry a pistol for self-defense, you're in deep shit.

yep, not to get in a big thing but shit happens and in our legal system we don't really punish people that harshly for being stupid. Just the way it is.

I see your point, Mak762. True enough, it's not patently illegal to be a moron. If it were, we'd all be felons at some point in our silly lives. I was just struck at the seemingly light sentence imposed on this guy who brought so much grief and agony to two families.
