Getting my licence soon, what do you think about Beretta Cougar full size? I know it doesn't make sense but even for carry I don't like compact models. Any suggestions?
Thanks! |

I considered the Cougar. I'm a big fan of the KISS principal, and the cougar just seemed too complicated and easy to put back together wrong. Never regretted the decision to go Glock.

View Quote If you're carrying concealed, the gun should at least be concealed! I would recommend a Glock 30 - compact, ten rounds in the mag and one in the chamber, and dead reliable. Mine is accurate too! I carry mine in a Bladetek IWB holster with two spare mags in a Bladetek carrier on the other side...... |

The Cougars are really underrated pistols, the ones that I have shot have been completely reliable, and felt good in the hand.
I used to be a die-hard 1911 guy, but have moved to an H&K USP Compact .45 for daily carry. I have put my Wilson Combat CQB and Wilson tuned Colt Combat Commander up on the shelf in favor of the H&K most days. It doesn't have as sweet a trigger or as much style as the Wilson 1911s, but I shoot it nearly as well, and I don't mind sweating all over it on 100 degree days. |

I carried a Colt Combat LW Commander (70 series for you 1911 fans out there)in an IWB holster for years - cocked and locked. This pistol has an alloy frame which reduces the weight considerably. I also have carried a full size Government Model and Officer's Model concealed.
Due to the thin dimensions of the 1911 style pistol - it conceals very well unless you are a petite build. The Glock 30 is a great compact .45 to carry also. It is chunkier and will print through clothes a little easier due to that fact. I really wish Glock would consider making a "Commander size" .45 that would take G22 mags - it would be a winner I think. Welll there are my personal choices..... [sniper] [b]The Sniper |

Another vote for the Glock 30.
I carry it easily IWB behind right hip. No Problems. Simple and Accurate. |

Para-Ord P-12. Same size as a Colt Officer's model, but 12 rounds plus one in the pipe.

I think the colt commander is a good size for carry go with the lightweight model.Or equivelent springfield, kimber

I would get the Beretta Cougar 8045F.
It sounds as if you like the way it feels in your hand. That would be my first clue to which one you want. You may even prefer Berettas, as I do. If so, get one. 8+1 in .45 and it's a Beretta...nice combination. I want one for my next Beretta purchase. |

Glock 30
HK Compact if you feel you must have an external/switched safety. |

blazeone,
Can't go wrong with a Glock especially in the Texas heat. I carry either a 1911 (either a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special or Springfield Armory Tactical Responce Pistol) or in the warm months I carry my Glock 35. I find the 1911's easier to conceal because they are more flat than the Glocks. If you are looking for a small / thin .45, I've talked to a couple of guys that are carrying concealed the Glock 36 (the new compact single stack) and they love them, even small guys can conceal them easy. The thing that I lick about the Glock is when it is warm and I start sweating I don't have as much problem maintaining the Glock like I do my 1911s. |
|
What? No Sig fans? I carry a Sig P220. It's a great gun with similar dimensions to a 1911. One of these days I'll get a Kimber too.
|
|
I carry both a Glock 30 and a Kimber Ultra Carry off and on. But i have found the Kinber does deeper concealment better. It all matter if you prefer the few more rounds on something with a lil less print. Either one will make a great carry weapon........

Any suggestions? Thanks! View Quote Were I to carry, I am in love with my plain jane Colt government, series 80.(I live in the OTHER state where nothing is allowed.)The only mods I made were a flat backstrap, Wilson trigger, and a set of Pachmyr's (sp)grips |

Glock 30, 36 if you prefer the single stack frame. HK USP 45C is nice, but maybe a little big. Glock 27 is nice.

1.Star PD
2.Lightweight Comander or Kimber lightweight with4" barrel 3.H&K Compact. Its not as big as it looks. |

Is price a consideration or are you on an unlimited budget?
Glock's run around $550. Most of the rest, particularly the Kimbers are Twice that. Get what fits your hand and is most comfortable for you to shoot well. Concealment and Capacity should be secondary considerations. |

Is there a Board for 1911's like the Ar15.com and Subguns Boards? I have been bitten by the 1911 bug. Thanks Bruce

Most of the recommended pistols are fine.
Barrel length shouldn't be less than about 3.75" on this caliber if you expect the bullets to behave as they do in 5" service pistol barrels. The USP-45C, perhaps due to it's polygonal rifling, produced MVs pnly 5-10 fps slower than 5.25" standard rifled barrels. USP-45C doesn't feel right to some folks, but it's a very nice combination. If you're comfortable with the Beretta M9/M82FS, the M8045F feels right. This pistol, however, is lubrication sensitive and will malfunction if grease is used on it. Of course, grease isn't called for in ANY pistol manual I've read lately, but many folks think they know better than the factory. There's one more pistol for this role which is very reliable, yet for some reason is under-rated in this role: Taurus PT-945. This is an 8+1 .45ACP with the [proper] frame mounted safety-decocker. Can be carried cocked and locked, or hammer down safed, or hammer down unsafed. Same as the HK USP with an ambidextrous lever (HK copied this arrangement). With it's stock, thin grips it's smaller than the Commander and holds an extra round. The action on this pistol takes very little force to operate which makes it very nice for smaller folks. Some folks aren't comfortable with cocked and locked, or without a positive safety. This rules out (for them) very capable pistols such as the Colt Commander (or other M1911 type), or any SIG or Glock. -- Chuck |

Thanks for all the ideas. Next gun show I'll try them all with my holster. And go from there.

Since you don't want a compact, try the HK USP .45. If you like the Beretta, by all means, GET IT!!! I have a SS Beretta 92 and I'm more accurate with that than any of my other pistols. I usually carry my Glock 19.

|
Glock 30. Idiot proof and as reliable as the sun rise. Conceals wells and has the best finish on the market. Lightweight and not as expensive as some of the other weapons listed.
|
|
My opinion for size, reliability, weight, accuracy, price, and yes looks would be an HK USP Compact.
NO SLACK! |

And the winner is: Kimber Ultra Carry stainless steel 45. After touching and feeling many, I decided to get over my compact issues and went with this weapon. I thicnk i'm going to lover it! Thanks all.

I see price really wasn't an option in this decision.
Hope you smile as much as I did when I bought my first "carry".[8d] |
