Ah! two reasons.

1. She was so self absorbed, NOTHING I could say would make her see how mean she was and PROBABLY just turn her anger towards me
2. I was more concerned about the HD cashier and making him feel better.

Although in hind sight, I should have walked up to her in the store and ask her "Excuse me do you work here?" https://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/icon_smile_wink.gif

I had to go to a local restaurant to straighten out a botched catering order yesterday.  My wife was going to go and "set them straight".  I volunteered to go instead.  I walked in and told the girl at the counter that we had a problem with the order.  She wasn't terribly bright or motivated but I think she was starting to panic a bit and get all defensive.  The manager started heading my way, the wife of a good friend, and asked what the problem was.  I just laughed and said "You know me.  I'm always "that guy..."."  Immediately the whole kitchen staff jumped in and took care of their screw up, we all got a laugh or two, and I was out the door.  The last words for that moderately slow girl at the counter to me before I left was "Thank you.  You didn't have to be that nice.".    Yes I did.

I reserve the right to be an outright asshole for the times when someone really has it coming.  And I can be exceptionally effective at it.   But I've sworn to only use my powers for good.

Nothing grinds my gears more than someone abusing the hired help.

Yeah, I've been that guy who wouldn't correct her but those days have come to an end.  Sorry, I've worked retail, customer service, and tech service/support.  There are times I can't speak up so if I'm not the one behind the counter register, I'm going to speak up for them (and for being a basicly decent human being).

Restaurant guy, so I see it a lot. Yes, sometimes it’s the employees fault and sometimes it’s the guest. For some reason some people see service industry folks as less than human and treat them so. All managers have been taught to kill it with kindness to defuse the situation but we are very firm on not taking abuse of any form. Problem customers are dealt with appropriately and shown the door. Not only are you abusing my employee(s) you’re ruining everyone else’s dining/drinking time.

Out in public I love it when the one being a shithead starts looking around trying to find validation for their antics. I’ve made a few people shrink with my eye to eye fuck you look.

My buddy owns a restaurant. One day the owner's son came in with a crowd to eat. The server obviously did not know who was the customer. Now granted that the son was rude and demanding so the server mouthed back and made a scene.

The next day the server was called into the office by the boss. The boss had his son apologize to the server for being an asshole. The boss also went on to tell the server that it took guts to stand up for himself.

The boss explained a couple different things to the employee.

1) Life isn't fair
2) Stand up to yourself but know your place. Being a server he will encounter jack wagons. Just because it was wrong of a customer to be rude doesn't mean he gets to be rude back on the job.
3) If the server was willing to go off on the owner's son, then there is no telling who he will go off on next.

Then the boss terminated his employment.

I invited the company VP down for a chat.  Unfortunately i was unable to get this human garbage fired...but she got suspended for a week no pay...so better than notjing

I'm an introvert and far from a "people person." I don't think I'm above anyone and understand that most people working fast food, retail etc probably aren't living the most awesome life. It takes no extra effort to treat them with kindness and respect. If something gets screwed up or I have to wait longer than I expected chances are it wasn't directly their fault.

It's a first world problem scenario. How dare I have to wait a few more minutes for the Christmas tree I'm trying to buy at the last minute. How dare I have to wait an extra 30 seconds for my Venti, double moca, two-pump peppermint, skinny, vegan, GMO-free frappuchino. Don't you know how much more important MY time is?

What really pisses me off about dealing with poophead customers is when you have a pussy for a boss, it was like you got screwed twice, once by mr or ms a. hole, and then by the boss.

Real bosses do not let customers screw with their employees, and take corrective measures to make sure it never happens again

The retired GWOT army vet manager I had at a pizza chain in TX would ban customers who didn’t tip, were abusive to drivers, or just assholes. It sucked to lose money or deal with a hole, but at least you never had to deal with that hole again.

My manager at the same chain in CO was the total opposite. Every customer complaint no matter how ridiculous was valid. You were losing even more money redelivering an order for nothing, and having to deal with another round of abuse from the impossible to please “customer”. That spineless mofo cost me a few profitable shifts, nothing worse than going home in the hole instead of being paid.

My manager at a major outdoor retail chain was pretty lousy too, he’d let abusive customers walk all over us then blame us for not making them happy.

I’m not saying managers need to do like Ace in Casino with the dude with his feet on the table, but a ban and trespass makes your business a much better place for your employees and the customers who’ll actually make you money.

A customer is someone whose transactions add to your bottom line, and whose presence improves the atmosphere of your business. You lose nothing by tossing out an oxygen thief and timewaster who costs you money and brings down the morale of the establishment.

I let retail and wait staff slide with a lot of shit.  Because, I've been there and know what they deal with.  Also I'm in IT so I still have to deal with shit people everyday, I just get paid better now...

So it takes a shit ton for me to bitch or make a scene.  But you can bet it's earned if I do it.

Not a retail story . .  but related:

I took the GMAT (the exam to get into MBA school) about 22 years go.  I screwed up during one section of the exam - I was filling in my last answer on the scantron sheet just as they called TIME and realized that I was one line off somehow.  Somewhere along the way I skipped one of the answers, so every answer afterwards was off.  I didn't know if it was the first answer or near the end, so I didn't know how bad I screwed up.  You have one chance to cancel your test, so I was hoping I could talk the two ladies proctoring the exam into letting me check my answer sheet so I could figure out what to do.  They told me straight up that I was SOL and there was nothing they could do.

Some gal taking the test walked up and started ripping into the proctors, yelling at them that it was illegal for them to ask for social security numbers for ID.  They had actually said something like "enter your SSN or alternative ID number if you have that instead" - but this gal was dumb and being really mean.  She was getting nasty and the proctors looked like kicked puppy dogs.

I was pissed about my screwup and how this gal interrupted us with this BS and how she was being an insufferable bitch to someone who didn't deserve it, so I turned to her and just ripped into her - "Hey!  That's not what they said and there's absolutely nothing they can do about GMAT testing procedures anyways, so there's nothing they can do for you."  Her: "But it's illeg . . "  Me: "There's nothing they can do for you . . nothing . . go write an angry letter to the testing service or something - but you're bitching to the wrong people . . . just go, leave, now. . .  LEAVE . .  NOW . . ."  I then mad dogged her, pointing at the door until she turned around and left.

I turned to the proctor and said "what a nutjob".  The proctor had a huge smile on her face, said "Thank you!" and pulled out my test sheet and compared it to my circled answers on my questionbook.  We figured out that I had just missed the 4th to last question . . so no big deal.

I have a friend who's a Home Depot store manager.  I was talking to him at the store one day when we overheard a male customer cussing at a female employee.  My friend walked over to the man and proceeded to tear him a new one, without cussing.  The rude customer told him that he'd never shop there again.  My buddy told him he wasn't welcome back in the store and didn't want his business and if he came back he'd be trespassed.

The puss slunked away and left.

This is the secret if you’re going to do it on company time. It has to be rare, completely out of character and there can’t be any witnesses.

When I ran an equipment rental facility it was easier. Being a dick  could cost you a cleaning fee, which could be up to $200.

I mostly do it on my own time, when I’m shopping at Home Depot or the grocery store.

One of THE BEST customer outrage revenge stories I ever heard was taught to me by a kid with Down's Syndrome

His mother told me this story.

Her son worked in the grocery store bagging groceries. This young man always has to bag everything just perfect. So one day as he was bagging, apparently he was taking a little bit longer than the consumer appreciated so she snapped at him "OH WOULD YOU JUST HURRY UP!!"

He quickly finishes and hands her the bags while saying (I love this) "I'm sorry, I hope tomorrow is a better day for you"

The next day the woman comes in to the store asking to speak to the manager. The woman looked like she did not have a good nights sleep and asked to speak to the young man. She sees him and apologizes for the way she spoke to him yesterday and just could not sleep at all last night.

The young man said "Don't worry about it. I forgot about it right after you left"

I worked retail.  Recreational and hobby sales.

The surprising amount of people are self absorbed pieces of shit.  Make you appreciate the good ones that come in.

One thing that I learned rather quickly was if you stand there blank faced while they vent.  It will piss them off even more.

If I really hate you,  I would stand there blank faced until I have had enough of your shit and ask "if you are done now...."  And carry on with whatever the issue is.

On a very rare occasion I would give them an outside warranty or help phone number for them to call and wash my hands of their shit.

I can count 2 times I told customers to find the door.

Good customers or even frustrated ones that are reasonable and polite would have heaven and earth moved to help them.

I miss working with good people.  Fuck the miserable self absorbed pricks.

A lot of people get verbally beat up on at work and at home. They take it, then lash out at a cashier or store clerk to regain, in their mind, their self respect.

I once told a miserable cunt (former boss) that was in the middle of giving me one of her annual berating sessions. "I am not surprised your husband is banging other women.  You are a miserable human being".  During that conversation her father who is also a worthless vile human started to berate me, I turned and asked him "what are you here for? You aren't my boss... You taught her well didn't you?".

They stood there mouths agape.  Her soon to be ex husband laughed.

I went back to work...   Never heard another word about it.

She ran that place into the ground after they divorced.

CSB for ya:

Had a 50's something bitch pissing and moaning in line at a local frilly foods store yesterday (picking stuff up for the female unit).  This fuck was chewing her gum with her mouth open and bitching about how long the line was taking.  I had the pleasure of being in front of her in the line so I got to hear everything (smack smack smack.... bitch bitch.... smack... bitch).

She decides that it would be a good idea to solicit additional people into her misery by tapping me on the shoulder and asking how awful the line was.

I turned around and proclaimed so everyone including the cashiers could hear: "It would be a lot more bearable if you'd shut your damn mouth"

She didn't say another word, I didn't say another word, we all waited and checked out and left to go on our happy ways.
