no poll? I'd say with 22T debt we're pretty high on the corruptness scale. That's not just the government and politicians either if there wasn't a certain high percentage of avarice in the general populace the politicians would never be able to buy votes with welfare handouts.

tough question.

I'd say we're middle of the road.  Maybe towards the top with first world countries.

How obvious do you like your corruption? If you like really obvious corruption to the point of needing to keep cash on hand for bribes, we are pretty low on that list. If you like more discreet corruption then we start to climb that list.

1. All government is corrupt. This is why limited government is best government.
2. People from other countries look at our government as naive because we can't hang in terms of corruption with their country.

Of course our government is a pit of snakes, but it's not even close to the scope of other countries. We're not even as corrupt as FIFA.

By what yardstick though? Are we talking local Sheriff's Deputy in Wyoming, or a Federal Senator?

It depends on what you use to measure.

Retail corruption?  US is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. Almost everywhere else, except Canada and certain parts of western Europe, retail bribes of police and local bureaucrats are simply the way things are done.  Yes, it does happen here, and when people get caught, it makes news. South of the Rio Grande, South of the Alps, East of the Oder River, and west of the Sea of Japan? It's like speeding - technically a crime, but only enforced for reasons other than stopping the crime.

Influence peddling/corporate influence?  Much more prevalent than retail corruption, but the same caveat - EVERY OTHER COUNTRY works closely with, and has a tight relationship with, it's domestic corporations. Germany treats Siemens special because, well, Siemens is German. In the US we must treat all companies the same, so GE should get bupkiss.  When they don't, it makes news.

Foreign Corrupt Practices Act:  This ones a winner.  We are the only country that prosecutes people for actions that are *legal* in other countries.

One reason we seem corrupt when we look at ourselves is that we expect so much more from ourselves and our government. I think in general that's a good thing.  But the risk is that, with so many high horses being ridden, it only takes a few to fall beforer a moral panic ensues and we start making even more bad law.

Our politicians and our media are owned by the same people.  Free speech is demonized, and politicians don't speak without running their statements through a focus group.  Politicians openly and legally accept bribes and participate in insider trading.

You can have cash stolen from you on the highway under color of law in order to supposedly prevent others from possessing drugs. On the other hand, you can't bribe the police here, although they do play political favorites as seen recently.

Our high-level non elected politicians are also often corrupt, as SOS Hillary Clinton sold some of our strategic uranium to the Russians.  Literally sold them in exchange for payment made to her "charity."

They sneak illegals into the country and encourage them to vote in elections.  They take your money by force and give it to those same illegals, as well as our own domestic shitbirds.

Our politicians don't commit pogroms or try to assassinate one another either.  This may be more due to the fact that they all play for the same team, but it may be a sign we aren't as corrupt as we could be.

So let's look at corruption on a scale, starting with the least corrupt:

1. Camelot (King Arthur)
2.  Sealand (assuming it's even still a nation)
3.
4.
5.  Colonial British America
6.
7.
8.  Modern America
9.
10. Mexico, Honduras, etc.

It's a different type of corruption here than in countries without elected officials.  Here, politicians mask their illegal and unethical practices as much as possible so they can continue their insider trading and influence peddling.  They learn to be skilled liars and talk a good game to curry favor with the voters while they have an agenda to profit from their position. That agenda often results in actions that are not in the best interest with what's best for this country and it's people.

We're corrupt. We just sweep it under the table.

In some countries you flat out know how much of bribe it is. In the US you have to do campaign donations, donate to charities, 3rd Party groups, etc.... makes accounting hard. Plus paying the lobbyists.

In Latin America you just pay the local strong man and get one with your life.

I'm convinced that half the population (democrats), our education system and our media are corrupt as hell.

I don't know where that corruption ranks in world but it ranks pretty high in my mind.

There are third world countries in which the brutality of corruption is unsurpassed, that being said it is a whole lot easier to be corrupt in a third world country.

Being corrupt in a top tier first world nation is a whole other ball game and the US federal government on a corruption monetary scale is off the freaking charts, on a political power scale off the freaking charts, virtually every department in every branch is oozing with it; from the buying and selling of congressmen who the will of the people has no meaning, to corporate welfare, to the mass importation of third world migrants for political gain and cheap labor, to our welfare system that is designed be feeding tube of tax dollars for corporate America to gorge on while intentionally oppressing a segment of society for political gain, to our justice system that would rather pervert law that adjudicate it, and rule using case law rather then the constitution, to our public school system that is a full blown mind control operation, to a NSA that spies on everyone, and a political party that uses that classified data, vote fraud and a sundry of other means to rig elections at every level, I could go on and on!

The US government, and not just at the federal level has to be without a doubt the worlds most corrupt.

We are so corrupt as a country that there are legal ways to funnel money into the bank accounts of politicians and their families. You can't give money to a politician for favors but you can give all the money you want to a politician's foundation and the money goes to the same place as if you dropped a bag of cash on their desk.
