Special Investigator for Child Protective Services. She is only 30 days in, still training and shadowing other investigators. In this short time some of the shit she has seen is incredible.
She says a great many of the complaints followed up are BS, and they have to be very careful about overstepping their bounds with regard to parental rights. I was actually glad to hear that just because you spank your child, doesn't mean you lose your kids. But some of the shit is bizarre. Incest, heroin shooting mom's, etc. Not a job I could do without losing my temper. |
A friend did that for a short time. Tough line of work. Hope your daughter is strong - I'd lose my shit in short order and do things that would land me in jail, some messed up "parents" out there.
Takes a heart of steel to do a job like that, considering the people you encounter.
God bless her. Keep an eye on her and be there for her, OP - she's probably gonna see some of the worst humanity has to offer.
tell her to make a changing area in her garage at home
she does not want to be wearing the same clothes home into her house that she wears on house calls at work |
100% truth, also buy some bug spray chemicals on Amazon with spray bottles to keep in car, keep hair up and sprayed with hairspray.
Shot job with high burnout rates.
A friend of mine is a rape crisis nurse. Some of her stories would be a NC17 movie if not full XXX if they were done true to life. Edit; tell her to make good friends with people she works with. It's hard to decompress when you can't talk to people who understand what you see every day. |
I did that right out of college and it was the WORST job I have ever had. You see a lot but they over work you for what you get paid. Give you unreasonable work loads and take forever to pay you back for travel and food. I hope she does well but I would never recommend it to anyone. I lasted 1 year before walking out. Maybe MI is better than TX in that department.

Watch her my friend, it can lead to depression in her life and.... who could blame them?

Wait until one parent falsely accuses the other of something.

She is the mirror of my wife, both super kind, good hearts, truly want to help people. Not calloused mentally AT ALL. I think my daughter will end up doing something else down the road. I'm being hypocritical about it as well. It is a STATE job, awesome pay, benefits, very happy for my daughter etc....and I talk shit about gubmint employees all the time. We have had that conversation as well....as in "don't become a lazy state employee". Honestly though, like LEO and Fire Departments, this is something I don't mind seeing my tax dollars spent on. |

While not nearly as bad, this is some of the same stuff that teachers have to deal with too. A lot of kids talk about their home life to their peers and the adults around them and some of the stories are terrible.

Good for your daughter! The old "Lazy State Employee" comes from within the system. Employees are beat down with policy and procedure to the point where they just don't care anymore. I've been a State Employee for 24 years now. About 8 or 10 years ago we were put under another agency that loves making up BS policy and procedures. They have brought our production to a snails pace trying to get work done. Just this year, we were instructed no more purchases after June 9th since the fiscal year starts on July 1. And no new purchases until July 9th. So a 30 day hold on projects because one area of our department decided to extend their time by 3 weeks, while classes are still starting on schedule.
At some point, employees just get fed up and say fuck it. |
I am sorry to tell you that she will most likely become bitter and cynical.
Seen it happen many times. |

The SIs are former LEOs who still hold valid peace officer licenses. I was an investigator. I liked working with SIs and hated it too. They were kick ass interviewers and evidence collectors but it usually meant a child death or a seriously fucked up case. Glad I was only there a couple years. |

Does she have kids already?
She won't want to by the time she burns out |

Damn OP. I hope she has access to care for herself. As much as that is a really needed profession, I can't imagine how it won't take a toll.

How are her self-defense and situational awareness skills?
I helped with a women's self defense seminar several years ago and half the class were social workers. They had serious concerns regarding the situations their jobs put them in and several had already been in minor altercations. |

Personally, I would have a hard time doing my job. I am just a member of the community, but I am involved and a concerned citizen at my local high school, I have met more than my share of messed up parents and messed up kids. I met one grandmother who has to raise a 16 y/o kid whose parents are in prison for drug violations. No fun at. I wish your daughter well.

I never liked that part of LE work.
Those folks are truly blessed to deal with that aspect of humanity on a constant basis. Insist that she find someone to talk to. In the unfortunate circumstance when something happens, and she believes she should have seen it. She is going to beat herself up badly over it. |
As a foster parent, please tell her she's doing a great thing.
Given the back stories from some of the kids we've received...I can't imagine what she sees. |
She will be going into shitty houses in shitty neighborhoods at night sometimes.
Hopefully she is armed. |
I know a foster mother who got ratted out by her kid for serving fresh green beans for dinner!
My mom did that job on an Indian reservation. She didn't do it very long for many reasons.

I'm going through fostering training now, and some of the stories i hear from the social workers is crazy, but yeah you are not losing your kids for spanking them.

That's an important job to have good employees performing. I've met some really good ones. But I've seen at least one really bad one.

If you think incest and heroin (or any drug use) among other parents qualifies as "bizarre," be thankful you have lived such a sheltered life.
