There hasn't been a total solar eclipse in North America for last 38 years. This year, on August 21st, a total solar eclipse goes right through the US from the west cost to the east coast.

There will be another in the US in seven years, but then there won't be another until 2045. If you have any chance to see this, it is really a once in a lifetime astronomical experience.

I'm planning to take a trip to Mammoth Cave with friends and family, since the eclipse will be passing very close to that area. I only live a few hours north of Cave City.

I seriously want to, haven't decided on where yet. Driving up from FL to SC would be the quickest route, but it's probably going to be packed.

Maybe an overnight flight out to some unknown midwest town would be the better option.

You can pick any spot on the path, and the path is tens of miles wide, so if you just find a lone country road it should be empty of people.

The weather is the thing I'm concerned about, but it's August, which is usually the dryer part of the year.

I'm heading up to Wyoming somewhere to see it. As a photographer and an astronomy nerd, I wont pass this up.

But yes, I plan on going, probably to Wyoming, maybe far NW Nebraska. I've been looking forward to this for many years. I've seen many partial eclipses, and one annular eclipse, but never a total solar eclipse.

We have two sets of hotel reservations inside the band of totality - one in Nebraska, one in Tennessee. We'll wait and see what the forecast is for both locations before we head out.

My farm is 4 miles from the center of the path, 2 minutes and 30 seconds of total eclipse. We're going to have a BBQ/4 Wheeler/Shooting/Eclipse get together.

My town is right in the path for the total eclipse. I bought 50 pairs of solar viewing glasses. I intend to close my shop for a half hour or so and stand around in the yard behind my store and pass out glasses to anybody who wants to join me. My shop is on one of the highest points in town and has a grassy yard behind it. Other than the dog poop it should be a great place to watch.

How do we know you didn't photoshop those? Hell, I could have done it in the darkroom 30 years ago . . . (BTW, I'm just messing with you. Today you can't trust any picture and well, a solar eclipse photo would be a no brainer to dummy up).

My brother lives in Carbondale, IL, which is almost right smack dab in the middle of the viewing path. I plan on visiting him that day and enjoying the show.

Probably gonna take the day off work and make a quick drive over the mountains to Jackson Hole so I can be smack in the middle of the path of totality and get over 2 minutes of photography in of the Tetons in some spoooooky lighting!

Maybe some time lapse, that would be pretty sweet too...

Drove down to Mexico from San Diego to witness a total eclipse in 1991. 6 minutes of totality

A few months later we had an annular eclipse in San Diego.

I'll headed to Ore to view this one, then leaving for Maui later in the day.

I watched that eclipse, October 2014, IIRC? The sunspot group was spectacular. And that was just a partial eclipse.

Getting about 2 mins of totality.

I am going to a star party this saturday. Some of those folks are going to Wyoming, the chance of clear weather is better.

We are! It is also our 36th wedding anniversary. We live almost in the center of the path but plan on going camping in the center of the path. Already have our eclipse glasses!

Dead nuts center of totality looks to be a quarter mile or so south of me.

Map says we will get 2 minutes 38 and a half seconds.

I put in for a vacation day at work to watch it with the brats.
