All of the garter snakes I've seen were black with green/yellow stripes the length of its body.

I've never seen one like this.  Although it's shape is right, the colors just don't jive.

Chokeys right it is a Midland Brown. Looks like the more dull colored garter snakes we have down here in the desert.

I'll be damned.  I've never heard of these before.  Looks like a match.

Thanks!

Can she keep it alive if she feeds it worms?

This, without any doubt; I used to keep them when I was a kid.

They do eat worms, slugs, inverts.

Yep.  They don't bite, and they usually do well on worms.  But they spend most of their time underground.

Right across the river from you.  We saw a garter last weekend, it should be a good year for snakes (probably for ticks too).

Ticks are thick this year.

Wife and daughter are in the shower right now after wife found one crawling out from under her watch band.

As soon as I get pics uploaded, I'll start a new thread.  Give me just a minute.

Do you attribute this to a wet winter/spring?

Damned if I know.  They were bad three years ago and have been getting worse every year.

I've been out three times this year and each time I have found a tick on me.  Not attached, but crawling.

Dekays

AKA brown snake

They are harmless. I would even say they are quite good natured.

Not stinky and bitey like garter snakes.

Nobody should be killing snakes unless they are poisonous. Snakes eat slugs, mice, rats, etc.,

She is seven.  She has played with garter snakes before.  She saw this one and asked if it was safe to touch.  I could tell it wasn't venomous, so I said yes, but don't hurt it.

Don't know why people just can't let them be? I see them frequently on the Goldwater Range.

Was it tiny, with a bright orange/red belly? Red-Bellied snake. They get a little bigger than a foot long and the diameter of a pen barrel.

It amazes me the people who don't understand this.

A couple of years ago, I was in the Great Smokies NP and happened on a rattle snake on the trail. I pointed it out to others to stay away from. One of the guys told me I should kill it. Yeah right...........

People should kill a mass unless it's an evasive species like in the Everglades.
