Yeah, and it's a pretty good recruiting tool for our all-volunteer armed forces. I remember the "Snake vs. Mongoose" battles between Don Prudhomme and Tom McEwan in the '70s. Those cars had, at one time, very prominent sponsorship by the US Army and US Navy. I think one of them even raced an F-14 as part of a publicity stunt / magazine article. (As if there's a difference.) I think it's a very appropriate and effective use of the military's advertising budget.

actually they have been sponsoring race teams for many years now, and it comes out of their advertising funds, and the armed forces set up tents with info at race tracks on occasion. i dont see anything wronge with it, i would rather see a marine on the hood of a nascar then freakin VIagra

That was good stuff. Even though I thought it was a good idea for that era, I still don't buy into it fully. I mean drag racing requires a HUGE[b/]budget for all the parts they break and everything....and it doesn't have a very big fan base, nor is it visible- I mean how long do you see a top fuel dragster...three minutes max! NASCAR is a better investment.

Although the dragster gets much less TV time, it is much more accessible to the fans at the track. That's one of the great things about drag racing: the paddock is very open. From that standpoint, it's getting much more eyeball time from the spectators than a roundy-rounder. Sponsorship of an NHRA car also makes sense because the demographic of the spectators is more in line withe what the military is looking for: teenagers. With NASCAR, the demographic is all over the place, so the sponsors are trying to market to just about everybody. It's much more difficult to target a narrow audience.

Nascar drivers spend hours circling the track looking for the finish line, while dragracers head straight to it![:D]

Yep.  Advertising and recruiting, coming from the same budget as those recruiting ads you see on TV.  That's part of having an all-volunteer force.  If we had forced conscription there would be no need for it.

Let's race!

Chief, are all control systems functioning properly, and within specifications.  We're going to be pushing the envelope today.
