Carter lost the election when gas lines were longer than the lines at a free strip tease joint. Carter's genius address to the public during the oil crisis during the winter was to put on a fucking sweater and turn the heat down. Really how in the hell can anyone relate this election to 1980. Reagan was from Cali, friends with Walt Disney and a western movie badass. It's okay to relate Obama to Carter but it is not okay to relate Trump to the man that hung with the Duke or Dirty Harry.

The overall votes leading up the election are similar.

The USA certainly isn't the same country as is was in 1980.

In 1980, Americans were shocked when Iran kidnapped a group of Americans in the embassy.  The whole country was obsessed with that issue.

in 2016, Americans didn't care when Iran kidnapped a group of American Navy guys.

any poll that has ohio AND arizona as "toss ups" is full of shit.

If Arizona is a toss up, Ohio is lost.

They can't both be toss ups.

Sure they can.  They are in no way identical.  Hell, I can see Ohio going for Trump while Arizona goes Clinton.

I was 18 yrs old when Regan won and a Army Ranger. I remember the 1st sgt handing ballots and saying I'm not telling how to vote. Just check the box with an R beside it lol.

Operation Eagle Claw cost Carter that election among other things and being an idiot.. the press was turning liberal back then. I was not even aware of how bad it had gotten out in the civilian world till after I got out. Before I went in you could just about carry a rifle just about any place. Even into a store if you needed to have a clerk look at it.  After I got out if LE saw it you were stopped in Fla. any ways.

He did say everyone was worried Reagan was going to start WW3 if elected.

Sounds familiar doesn't it?

Serious question..What was the media like back then?

There was much more emphasis on international stuff.  Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.  Iran holding US hostages.

TV/Radio - Most people got their news thru TV/Radio.  Every night, it was "America held hostage - day #123"
Print - More details were available from newspapers or news/financial magazines.

Most newspaper editorials were somewhat biased towards Carter.

Well as soon as voters realize that independent republican candidate pulling 8-9% of the vote isn't going to win Trump will have this on a lock.

At least 75% of polls today are linked to Democrat propagandists.

LA Times & USC are pretty left wing, but they've had Trump ahead most of the time.

The electoral college is made up of political insiders who will not tolerate an outsider. Not on either side. Trump has never stood a snowball's chance in hell.

LA Times has a really weird methodology.

Its either brilliant or FUBAR.

Apparently it worked very well in 2012.

that would be the interesting thing.  If he wins the electors and they just vote for hillary anyway.

I would love to see what happens after that.
those guys would need secret service protection for the rest of their lives.

Trump is no Reagan.

There was similar criticism of Reagan back in 1980.

They said he was too old, divorced man couldn't be president, an actor would make a lousy president, someone that used to be a Democrat to Republican couldn't be president...

I agree that Trump is no Reagan.  Trump has much more management experience.

You know Reagan was a two term Governor from California, right?

Yes.  And before that, he was president of an actor's union.

Regan was deemed a lousy two-bit B actor, who has no ability leading the free world against communism. Carter had 30 years of real world experience and was POTUS for 4 years

But that is not what Reagan was selling.

We had an embassy held hostage in Iran for over a year.

We had interest rates at near 16 % people could not buy a house

Carter made us drive 55

Wanted us to be cold in the winter and hot in the summer.

He was a wimp.

Reagan sold American exceptionalism

Strength

Pride

The American dream

Tax relief

He went straight to the people and the people stood with him.

There is some comparison but trump is no Reagan yet Carter in many ways was a much better person than Hillary.

35 percent don't care what she did they are voting for the bitch.
Another 10-15 percent are in for her because of the freebies

Let's hope a few of these two groups don't feel inspired or we are toast.

Trump may pull a few Reagan democrats back to outside because they simply cannot take the corruption.
