Just wondering, many of the complaints against TRump are similar to those against Reagan.........he's unstable, unprepared, too much of a cowboy, he's just an actor, he's a light weight........

so just how well was Reagan doing against Carter?

Yeah, I seem to remember Nancy was extremely embarrassed by that but still looked upon her man with adoring eyes..........

There are no parallels to this election.  You are wasting your time.

If you just use the Gallup data, it looks like this:

But if you use the campaign internal polls and network polls as well, it looks like this:

However most folks are going to believe what they want to believe, data be damned.

the polls were probably more trustworthy back then.   after the wikileaks disclosures on the collusion between the media and the clinton camp, i have zero faith in the polls.

Reagan V Carter, I was in gradeschool but it seemed like a lot of people were not very pro Carter by election time. Of course they'd be manufacturing news and pols for Carter's benefit if the two were running now. Reagan was a damn good campaigner and I'd bet they'd have a hard time slinging dirt at him. They'd have to manufacture much more.

it was my first presidential election and they had plenty of shit to throw at him and did.  starting with painting him as a blood thirsty war hawk.  i believe he was also against the panama canal hand over - but i could be wrong

if it wasn't for the Iranian hostages, i doubt he would have been elected.  it was no cake walk.

IIRC, Carter was slightly ahead in mid-October before the debate.

The company I worked for at the time had a Japanese engineer visiting for work on a big upcoming project and he watched the debate with us. He was riveted to the TV set and when Carter mentioned his daughter, he blurted out something like, "I'm not familiar with your election process, but I think that guy just lost the election!".

A couple of years later, he and I were down in Argentina starting up the project and some of the local engineers were (discreetly) complaining about their government. They said that the U.S. was lucky to have Reagan and not as many Socialists as Argentina did. Ken (the Japanese guy) replied, "They do have them, they just call them Democrats!"

Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher were well thought of down there by the more educated people we associated with, and this was after the Falklands War. Prince Andrew (a.k.a. "Randy Andy") was the hero of quite a few Argentine women.

i can appreciate that you're looking for a reason to hope, but don't delude yourself.  clinton will be the next president.

start making whatever preparations you feel are necessary without delay.

Other important points.  Everyone had just experienced extremely high inflation and loan rates over the previous four years with Carter.  Carter's approval rating was 37% in September and 31% in November.  Obama's approval rating is at 52%.
