Bubba Changs owner arrested after bat-wielding incident

A Howell-area business owner was behind bars and his restaurant closed Friday after he allegedly used a baseball bat to destroy a truck belonging to an employee he fired two days earlier.
---
“It is a mess,” Bezotte said of the situation at Bubba Changs, a new Chinese-American buffet restaurant at 4108 E. Grand River Ave. in Genoa Township.

Bubba Changs co-owner Jeremy Hamilton was arrested for malicious destruction of property, but he had not been formally charged as of Friday night.

Bezotte said detectives are looking for Hamilton’s brother and co-owner, John Hamilton, who allegedly chased the 21-year-old friend and assaulted him before fleeing the scene following the fight. The sheriff said both Hamilton brothers are believed to have wielded the bat at some point during the incident.
-----
Bezotte said preliminary investigation indicates that a former employee, Guan Chen, had been fired two days before and had returned to the restaurant to pick up back wages and personal belongings.

Bezotte said John Hamilton “chased” Chen into the parking lot before returning inside the restaurant and calling his brother, who argued with Chen when he arrived on scene. The nature of the argument was not immediately known.

“(Jeremy Hamilton) beat the crap out of (Chen’s) truck,” the sheriff said. “He knocked out the windows and demolished the truck.”

There were two people inside Chen’s vehicle and one was struck with the bat, Bezotte said. That person was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital in Howell and was later transported to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. His condition was not immediately known.

Bonus article as the place just opened recently!!

John Hamilton and his brother, Jeremy, have deep respect for their southern roots and Chinese culture.

They combined the two last month and opened Bubba Changs, a new Chinese-American buffet restaurant located in a shopping center just east of Grand River Avenue and Latson Road in Genoa Township at 4108 E. Grand River Ave.
