This is simple. A college education is an investment. Would you pay 500K for a double wide trailer? No, because that would be a poor investment...I don't care how cute or quaint it is...it will never be worth that much money. A financial analysis should be run before a student loan is issued based on earning potential and academic history of the student. Straight "A" student that wants to be a doctor...how much do you need? "C" student that wants to major in women's studies...we'll give you 1K a year. View Quote The banks aren't even the ones issuing student loans anymore. And when they were issuing them, the loans were guaranteed by the US.gov, so they didn't care about the risk. They were going to get paid either way. |

My wife is an SLP and went through the damn roof when she saw this. She worked waiting tables and TAing courses through her Masters and half a PHD, and graduated with no debt whatsoever.
Plus she tells me there are debt forgiveness programs for SLPs that work in certain schools. |

Wow! I'm a speech path and I left grad school with less than 14k in debt. With a little leg work it's not hard to find grants and scholarships if you're looking to be in this field.

Why did the OP put the legitimate profession of Speech Pathology in quotation marks?

It is, ultimately, her fault. But, I have a TINY bit of sympathy for these dopey kids. They are sold a bill of goods with these damn loans. I witnessed it myself when I was doing college tours with my kids.......they basically say, “Don’t worry about it....you are going to make tons of money." About 87% of the blame falls squarely on the vote-buying Marxists that got the fucking federal government involved in the higher education business. Yep, back before they got involved you could work a minimum wage job and pay for a good chunk of it. |

Speech pathology isn't a terrible job, google says it $ 75,000ish, but a quarter million dollar student loan debt for a $ 75k/year job? That's $ 25k a year in loan payments? I suppose if you live super frugally for ten years, rent, drive old cars etc, it's possible. Meh. Depends. Home Health is where the money is at....if you can stomach old people with dementia and the possibility of bug infested houses. Being a Nurse will probably pay more with less money towards a degree, and more jobs. A masters degree to be a Nurse Practitioner is an easy $100k job. CT tech here requires a base 4 year xray tech cert plus another 2 years in the actual CT program. They make close to 100k a year but then again so do nurses who have half the schooling time. |

At least she has been frugal.
You can tell she never spent a dime cleaning up those eyebrows. But seriously: couldn't have been a state school. Stupid decision #1: paying that much for anything that doesn't pay 6 figures out of the gate. The same degree would cost a fraction at a decent state school. |

Damn. My daughter got a law degree at a top tier school and racked up about $150K. But her first year salary was north of $180K and only going up.
I did pay for undergrad though. And Oxford. |

There should be a new question added to every college entrance examination...
"Do you understand the definition of a loan?" If you answer "no," you should not get into college. If you answer "yes," then shut your whore mouth about how much you owe in school loans. |

If you go Bachelors - Masters - Doctorate and you finance living on top of school, $250,000 would be pretty easy to hit This, this is what gets most people and it never gets mentioned by any of these people complaining about student loans. My wife is an SLP. Between grants, scholarships, working part time, living frugally, and eventually me telling her to stop working so she could focus on finishing and I covered the bills. We ended up with her having 9k in debt for her entire college career. I see some of her classmates however, and easily understand how this amount of money gets racked up. They don't work, live in fancy apartments, drove nicer cars than either of us, went out and spent money seemingly without care, and now are all freaking the fuck out about making huge monthly payments for all the money they borrowed living the high life for a couple of years. |

I have the feeling that she doesn't have any W2 or 1099s from those college years, and her lifestyle was probably better than how most of us here live.
I say this having an engineer associate who attended an $80K degree school. But accumalated $150K in loan debt. Should I have to mention that he used that money for things like a racing bicycle that costs as much as a new motorcycle? |

It depends on where you get you degree too. I'm a Physical Therapist, similar education with a little bit higher average salary. I was accepted into several doctoral programs and chose based on cost. I came out of PT school with about $50k in loans which is pretty low for this field. Some of my colleagues went to more expensive private schools and racked up a quarter million in debt. I was able to pay mine off in 3 years. Some of them will be paying until they retire. Aren't PTs required to have a PhD nowdays? Every PT at my wife's job has a PhD and are in their mid 20s/early 30s. The only one that has a Masters in PT is in her 50s and has been a PT for a long time. Maybe it's different outside the real sciences, but my dad (PhD - Chem) always said that if you paid somebody for your PhD then you'd fucked up somewhere. The more traditional doctorates, Chem/Physics/Bio/ yes. The professional, license type doctorates (PT/OT/Pharmacy/optometry/ etc ) you pay Most of the professional ones aren't PhDs. Makes my tuition of $21K seem like pocket change. And I left school debt free. And I nabbed a decent engineering job shortly after.
But since I didn't take out any loans, I get no reimbursement from the government. |

My (substantial) experience with speech pathologists is that they tend to be females from relatively affluent families. It's an extremely difficult major and not for the faint hearted. Large school districts are always hiring speech pathologists so one you're nationally licensed/certified, jobs are out there. But, $226,000 won't ever be paid back unless she marries rich. Didn't read the story, but I bet either the school choice had a lot to do with it, or she used her loan for living expenses (no job in college).
I have a niece that is a PHD (psychologist), over $250K in debt. She went to a CA school and lived off her loans. Now she's giving a few years to the Navy so they'll pay down some of the debt. |
