Umberto Eco, an Italian author who grew up in Italy under Mussolini and recently passed away, has defined "Fascism" as containing the following qualities.  Note, this was in 1995, and was in no way written about Trump.  There are 14 of them.  I'll score them for myself as follows: 1 point for each case where Trump strongly exemplifies it, 1/2 point for one where he sort of exhibits it and 0 for one where he doesn't practice it at all, and list why I think so:

That's because you're thinking of Nazism.  Fascism is more Mussolini, less Hitler.

You could apply that to any politician, particularly any conservative, and get the same outcome.

There's always been a pretty strong fascist streak in American politics, but that isn't what Trump represents.

Trump is a nationalist, sure, but more than that he the embodiment of what happens when conservatives stop being conservative about it.

The progressives have effectively defeated conservatism, and it turns out that when conservatives get mad it doesn't turn them into liberals or libertarians or moderates, it turns them into insurgents.

Trump has carefully chosen a few widely popular themes and positions on which to build a coalition, he's actually done a fantastic job of it too, avoiding all the pitfalls conservatives are prone to without actually taking any positions they'd find objectionable. This allows a broad coalition to project its individual concerns onto him without driving those factions that would object away.

If you want to spend a few entertaining minutes head over to DU tonight, they're in full panic mode over the realization Trump will be the nominee and Clinton can't possibly beat him.
