Finally picked up a S-250 shelter.   Minor damage, but it still has the air conditioner in it!    Also already wired up for lights and outlets.

It's got a 9k BTU air conditioner, which should just about turn the space inside into a meat locker.  Date of delivery on the AC was 1979, which is older than I am.   So it may well need a charge.  Takes R-22, I think.  So if it needs to be recharged, I'll have to consult an expert on the advisability of charging it with an r22 replacement, since legit r22 seems to be pretty damn expensive these days.

Got the whole thing for $400.   How'd I do?

I'm going to finish repairing that gouge with a piece of aluminum sign I cut out.  Fill it with expanding foam, then place patch on foam with double sided tape to hold it in place, then cover seams with jb-weld or devcon metal fill epoxy.    Should appear stock once sanded over and painted.

Then I'll go over all the seems with silicone caulk.

The trailer is an M101a1, so I'll need to get the space between the wheel wells expanded by about 4 inches total.  Cut 2 inches off each side and reweld.

Then I'll set the shelter in the trailer and have a pretty much instant small camper, with air conditioning.

Not sure how I want to handle powering the AC, yet.

eta: IMG codes apparently don't work with imgur anymore.   So if you want to see the pics, copy paste into your browser or (if your browser supports it) right click cold link and and open in new tab/window.

eta: There.  I fixed it.  Great Zeus's beard.

Approximately 850 pounds empty, IIRC.

Tow vehicle will be a M1009, which is rated for 3k towing.  Trailer weighs 1250, IIRC.

With gear and everything, it should still be within the tow rating of the truck.

Host one!  I'll have mobile air conditioned shelter for two.   So no reliance on FEMA trailers or anything.

Nope.  Single phase 115V

Two sets of courtesy plugs wired into the shelter.  28VDC and 115V AC.

Only thing I don't like about it so far is where they positioned it.   If I had my druthers, I'd put the second bed right on that bench instead of the AC.

I think it was meant to go in the back of the M37 trucks or the M715 trucks.   I'm not sure.

It won't fit in an unmodified M101, 101a1, or a2.  Too narrow between the wheel wells (I'm going to modify mine).

It will fit in the back of an m101a3 unmodified, however.

Very cool.  I've thought that this would be a good idea for a long time.  I spent a fair bit of time playing Army in an S-80 shelter full of radio teletype equipment.  The S-80 is narrower, having straight sides which fit between the wheel wells of the M-880 Dodge pickups.

Looks heavy duty.
View Quote

The trailer is rated for 1500 pounds off-road or slightly over 2000 on highway.

As for the shelter, I think it's way heavier duty than anything I'd care to spend the time or money to build.   I don't think I could have built anything nearly as nice as what I paid for it.

Double walled aluminum with what looks like about an inch of foam insulation in between.  Works pretty good for noise abatement, too.

The whole shmear is going to be towed by my cucv m1009.   Which is rated for max towing of 3000 pounds.   So the weight should be fine.   Only thing I'm worried about is the angle of the tongue downward on the blazer.

That 101a1 was originally designed to be towed behind a dodge M37, which is taller than a m1009 blazer.   So I might wind up doing a slight lift on the blazer or slightly smaller tires on the trailer or both.  Whichever is cheapest.

CUCV blazer doesn't have a reciever.   Just a hook.   I do have a pretty big riser I had a local welder make for me with a hook on it, so I can use it to flat tow that trailer behind a normal pickup truck with a 2" reciever.

2 could sleep in it comfortably with gear if it weren't for where the air conditoner is placed.   It's long enough for me to lie down on the "bench" completely with room to spare and I'm normal height 5' 10" or 11"

Not tall enough for me to stand in without bending my neck, tho.

Might look into doing like a bunk bed type arrangement along one side of the shelter rather than move the AC.   When it's just me and the dogs, I could use the top bunk for storage.

Modded trailer to accept shelter.  Widened the space between the fenders by a couple of inches.

Ospho and rattle can enamel on a few spots inside the trailer that won't be accessible with the shelter mounted.   Pulled the front and side rails.

Will mount up the shelter to the trailer, Friday.

I'm wondering if I should add a class 3 receiver to the tow vehicle, now.   Tow vehicle is a mostly stock M1009 blazer.

Trailer weighs 1300 pounds empty.   Shelter weighs another 850 or 900.  Then add a couple hundred pounds of gear.

It's rated to carry 2250 on the highway.  And that's a pretty conservative rating, in my opinion.

I'm not worried about overloading the trailer.

I think that bumper hitch on the 1009 is reinforced right?  Been a long time since I looked behind the bumper on one of those.
