ANDERSON, S.C. (Reuters) - To hear Donald Trump tell it, blue-collar workers here are suffering as much as ever, their livelihoods endangered by the familiar combination of foreign competition and U.S. companies eager to hold down labor costs.
It's Trump's mantra. He repeats it again and again at campaign stops like the one he made here last week. A leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination, Trump has made the health of the U.S. manufacturing a cornerstone of his insurgent campaign. In doing so, Trump is targeting a big pool of potential voters among disaffected blue-collar workers, even if it means alienating the business community and conservative free-market advocates and brings accusations of demagoguery. http://news.yahoo.com/anti-trade-message-trump-targets-reagan-democrats-120241966--sector.html |

Free trade has injured the blue collar worker and guess who voted Bubba in?
|
|
This is the other reason Trump has been so strong. I think "Free trade" as a Republican mantra is hurting the party more than abortion, or the other excuses from moderates. Republicans used to believe in economic nationalism. I doubt the party is smart enough to change though.

Because other countries would never raise tariffs on our exports, right Trump?
He's such a charlatan. A highly amusing charlatan. Cruz 2016. |

Modern "free" trade is anything but and has little connection to the principles forwarded by Freidman, etc.
It's the big government fascist economic model we know in this country but with international partners. Still subsidized by you and I and QE3000, of course. No wonder there is a populist backlash. Even folks stupid enough to believe the "trickle down" slur used to discredit supply side economics know that something is rotten with our trade strategies and those who direct them. |
|
If I was president and if China has high tariffs on our goods I will place the same tariffs back on them.
Let the tariffs fall where they may. Why do you call free trade when it is a one way street? |
|
Trump wants closed borders. Neocons want them open.
Trump wants fewer immigrants and visa workers. Neocons want more. Trump wants to protect American jobs. Neocons want outsourcing. Trump can't be bought off. Trump isn't an evangelical, which makes it more difficult to manipulate his ME foreign policy. It's no surprise that the GOPe despise him. |
|
|
Free trade only works when both sides are playing by the rules. Only the US does and we fuck ourselves. On top of that... when nations artificially lower the price of labor, it firther fucks us.

Free trade enables higher consumption at the same spending levels.
Why are we supposed to limit consumers' purchasing power by imposing tariffs? The price of domestic goods would rise as more dollars chase less goods. American production tends to be costly due to government intervention. |

Free trade means a level playing field; is the playing field level, or is it twisted and warped in favor of everyone except for the Unitd States?

View Quote When, as a result of the effects of the fraudulent and unfair free trade policies we currently engage in, the average American is employed in low wage jobs by Walmart, and in the hospitality, or service industries, it's going to be difficult to maintain spending levels and a decent standard of living. People wonder why their generation has lower expectations than the ones that preceded their own........ask yourselves; regarding the employment of Americans, what has changed? I shouldn't bitch; I'm getting richer as the economy becomes "more efficient" ( while fucking over the American Worker) while America goes down the tubes and yet, people demand more of the same. |

Many American workers want top dollar for mindless, skill-less work. Consumers should not have to subsidize Americans that aren't skilled enough to make it on their own. Most of the time, we just call that welfare.

I would be very happy to see manufacturing return to the USA from off shore. Our economy needs it very badly. View Quote I don't like posting this sortof thing here but fuck it. Over the years that I owned and operated my business I put literally hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy by offering specialized services and building facilities that were not available elsewhere. I purchased millions of dollars of Cummins and Caterpillar generator sets annually and millions of dollars worth of industrial valves of all sizes, pipe of all kinds, electric pumps and motors, boilers of all sorts, lithium bromide chilers ranging from around 90 tons to 1600 tons, ancillary equipment, electrical switchgear, wire...........And I always strove to use American made because a) it was superior, and b) it was good for America. And you know what? The great majority of that stuff is no longer made in America anymore and the foreign stuff is crap. For example, 50 year service life American Made 24" boiler king and globe valves have been relaced by Chinese or Indian valves, since American made valves were no longer available anymore. The replacements have a life cycle of about 10 years, require constant service, leak like hell, and the valve hand wheels will cut your hands off if you don't wear gloves......Garbage. And don't get me started on Mexican, Chinese, or Indian pipe....its pure crap. Many manufacturing jobs have gone overseas that should have remained here in the USA. Don't blame the workers, it's all about paying a couple of dollars a day for labor rather than employ Americans. And yes; I realize thatvevery swinging dick on this board who has ever read a textbook, had a professor tell him otherwise, or regurgitates what he's been told to think, knows better than I. But I do realize where Donald Tump is coming from. |
