I have an itch to buy a new pistola. What I have my sights set on is a Glock 17 or 19. I can't really make up my mind. What is your favorite? Pros and cons of each.

UPDATE - A few minutes ago I was out strolling around the hood with the dag and stopped to talk to a neighbor. We got to talking about guns and he said that I  should buy his. He just took an unexpected beating getting his bass boat out of the shop and needed a little money. What he sold me was an almost brand new Glock 17 with the original box and all the case candy. I offered to sell it back to him when his finances are better and he said  "fuck it, I'm selling the damn boat. I'll just buy another one" OK by me.

I'd take a picture but I have some home improvement bullshit going on right now and all my stuff has been moved around. Who knows where the camera is. It's just a plain jane stock gun anyway. Nothing special about it.

Glock 19 is the baby bear of the pistol world.

Just right.

Glock 19 it does everything the 17 does, but it is a little shorter where it counts. You can always stick 17 mags in it and have the same capacity as the 17.

As a matter of fact I always use 17 mags in my 19 when I am tooling around open carry.

I had both

I ended up selling the 19 ,because with my gorilla sized hands the 19's pistol grip just didn't feel as nice as the 17's

I'm more than pleased with my 17gen4. The only thing I added to it was a Ghost Rocket transfer bar

If you want sight radius get a 34 or 17L.

Figure out what you'll use it for, and go to a range and shoot both.

G17- Bigger, softer shooting, more capacity, maybe better accuracy (due to barrel length)

G19- Smaller, great concealment, very capable, accepts G17 mags

ETA: I have shot both, numerous times, and I don't regret buying the G19.

Has anyone looked into the typical differences in velocities between 17 & 19?

eta: We all know the real answer is to get a G18.

No accuracy difference between any of them from the 26 to the 17L. The 19 is probably the best general purpose 9mm out there. It's the best combination of size, weight, caliber, capacity, price, and aftermarket support. In my opinion it's a must have pistol.

Probably better answered in the Glock forum but...

Glock 17 - Holds 17 +1, Double stack, Larger (also 17L if 17 isn't long enough)                 Glock 34- Holds 17+ 1, Double stack, Larger (competition)

Glock 19 - Holds 15 +1,Double stack,  compact                       Glock 26- Holds 10 + 1,Double stack,  subcompact

Glock 43 - Holds 6 +1, Single stack , subcompact

(Listed all the possible 9mm Glock options for yah just for reference )
( since you wanted 19/17)

I have a 17 and a 26. The 17 is boringly fun to shoot. It just works, and works well.

The G19 is damn near the 'perfect pistol.' The G17 is a fine pistol but is too big to CCW and frankly offers nothing the G19 doesn't do better. If you already have a G19, sure a G17 might be a good option but one or the other? G19 all day long.

Gen 4 G19 'fixes' this. Let's be honest here, the G19 (any Glock) isn't a well-fitted grip, so many guns are better in that regard.

Very tuff call - I believe that a 19  is more versital and easier to carry.

I had a 26 - sold it and kept the 19.

I have a 34 to shoot two gun with.

Boils down to what you like and what you would like to do with it.  CCW - go with a 19

Bed side gun - go with a 17.  If you want to play any games - get the 17 and then get the 34 slide for it.

Get a 22 conversion kit to practice with as well.

More fun....Let us know what direction you go.

I ordered one and got it in yesterday and it looks fine.  Be sure to order the trigger spring listed so you can remove the horrific NY trigger gizmo.  It only takes a couple of minutes to swap it out.

I carry G19 daily, have G26 as a back-up, compete with G34 (3gun, plate matches) and G17 (GSSF)

I actually qualify better (more consistently) with the G26 than with the G19, go figure

I was talking about what would be the advantage of the 17 over the 19. Depending on his need for it Competitions/ CCW  what gun would be "Better" out of the two for that. Not saying the 17 is a competition gun, but is can be.

19 is the best overall Glock IMO.   If I wasn't doing a 19, I'd do a 34 long before a 17.    Don't ask me why, but a 17 doesn't feel right in my hands, but a 34 feels good.   If I do another Glock it'll probably be a 40 MOS.

Not yet.  The recoil spring looks like new.  The gun I got does not appear to have been fired much at a all.  Has a little Holster wear but the insides look great.

Is it for carry, or shits and grins?

19 is better size for carry.  Great size in fact for a 15+1 pistol.

I do as well - funny that the grip fits in the palm and it fits really good - the grip does not stick out of the bottom of my hand.

I tried the 19 two different times. I just couldn't get a grip without my finger riding in the space between the magazine and the bottom of the grip and it caused my accuracy to suffer greatly. No problems with either my Gen 4 26 or Gen 4 17. The 17 also carries just as easy as the 19 for me.

The 19 can do everything. The only place where it starts to show its limitations is in competition shooting, this where the longer sight radius of the 34 offers an advantage due to the longer sight radius. The 34 with a light is a good pistol for hime defense. Having both is a good combination,  because while the 17 is a compromise between the two it is a poor compromise. It isn't as good for a CCW due to its size but doesn't offer a significant amount of extra sight radius over the 19 compared to the 34. Getting the 19/34 combo is the right answer.

Quoting this for truth. I just don't see the appeal in the 17 either. It does nothing that a 34 won't do as a full size, and it's a bit too big for most to replace a 19 with for CCW.
