The longest meteor steaks I've seen have been 4-6 seconds.
This one was visible for 3 minutes, maybe. It started out looking like Mars was in the wrong part of the sky. Then looked like a plane climbing out of ROA, 50 miles to the south, but too orange for aircraft lights. I was probably watching it for close to a minute before I could begin to see the trail of sparks (for lack of a better term). |

Sure they're subject to stress, and lights refract/reflect with the atmosphere; but there's gotta be some really cool (or terrifying) shit going on. |

Most likely. I've seen similar twice and both times it was Soviet / Russian boosters burning up on re-entry. Pretty spectacular. |

I had my cell phone, but the video is worthless at night. I sometimes have my camera and tripod with me, but not last night / this morning. I was just letting my dogs out one last time for the night.
This whole thing started with me thinking, "hmmm, what in hell is Mars doing over there?" The relative motion was near zero long enough that I was trying to figure out what star this was, because I had never seen it before, and it wasn't in our orbital plane with the other planets. That went on for about a minute, before the round, red/orange "star" stared elongating in shape - I even pulled my eyeglasses off to wipe them thinking it was being caused by lens scum. After maybe 20 seconds of noticing the slightly elongated shape, that's when it started to leave a pronounced trail with the first sign of ablation, or whatever you call it. Here's a photo from roughly where I was standing, but this photo looks to the SSE, whereas this morning's debris originated in the SSW. The crazy green streaks in this photo are fireflies.

It on the Atlanta news stations as seen in Ga, AL, FL, TN and SC and now Va, Atlanta TV stations have some video of it...there s a NASA Sky Watch Cam there that caught it...probably a big piece of space junk or ISS decided to commit suicide cause the supply ship blew up and no snacks...
