1)   You guys don't know shit about grazing permits, grazing, or land management of BLM lands that Clive grazes.

2)  You don't know WHY grazing permits came to be, and why they are a good thing.

3)  Grazing permits are CHEAP.  The fees don't even cover the costs of managing that grazing so that it's sustainable.  They would have to be ~$10/AUM.  They are $1.69.

4)  Clive could have easily obtained one.

5)  The guys who posted up for him are idiots for fighting that cause, as it is an empty one if you understand 1-4 on a more intimate level.

6)  What did you expect?  If they let Clive get away with this, they will have a bunch more of this same shit.

Which begs the question of:  Why didn't he just get his permit?  He is entitled to the permit.  Fed AUM's are CHEAP compared to state/private aums (Fed AUM = $1.69/aum.  Private/state average AUM:  ~$20.) and stay legal so he wouldn't have issues.  You are right about his water rights and how big of a deal they are.....which is why I don't understand why he'd get all pissy about paying a fraction of the costs per AUM that he'd pay if he was dealing with the entities he wants to deal with (private/state) rather than the feds....who he dislikes (but gives him a deal of ~1/20th of the cost).

The reason for grazing permits stems from the dirty 30's, the soil conservation service, and the dust bowl.  Those things were caused by improper land management.  We cannot and should not let that happen again.....which it will if we allow for another tragedy of the commons by allowing unregulated over-use/abuse/neglect of lands that could otherwise be used sustainably (which is better for everyone in the end).

The lands not worthless at ALL.

A, it can be used as an offset for construction projects by the BLM to make money on solar farms.  I.E. whatever BLM (remember public) land the BLM makes a solar farm on, they can offset the destruction and habitat change by using other BLM land and "restoring" it to make up for the last habitat.  That worthless land is actually worth a LOT in revenue as a second order effect.

As long as Bundy runs cattle, he maintains the water rights in various areas, many grandfathered in. Water in Nevada is worth more than gold as it powers growth and money. It's why all the other farmers and ranchers in the area have been chased out. Bundy doesn't run cattle, Bundy doesn't get to keep the rights. Water rights revert, water goes to Vegas, or to the new little place Reid is building across the river.

So, in reality, the land is worth a LOT to many people.

WTF are you talking about? Dust bowl and soil conservation had FUCK ALL to do with grazing. I take that back, grazing cattle would have PREVENTED the issue. Those came around from FARMERS moving in en masse with shallow plowing technique of the time and ripping up all the native buffalo grass that had deep root systems, leaving exposed, loose dirty over the windy and dry plains. Cattle would have kept the soil down and their dung would have continued to fertilize the ground for plant growth.

Affix foil headgear.

Bundy was the last hold out. The BLM had put all the other ranchers in the region out of business by reducing their herd sizes to ridiculously low headcounts that made cattle ranching unprofitable. They demanded Bundy reduce his herd from historic 800-1200 head to an unrealistic 70 head for "Environmental Impact reasons". This reduction would have put him out of business like all those before him.

Tin foil part. Agenda 21. The gov does not want you to be self sufficient in your rural homestead. They want you in the urban areas where they can monitor you with the millions of cameras installed there and you are under their thumb with law enforcement minutes away if you step out of line. With you gone this opens up the rural areas to the big boys.

The beltway criminals do the bidding of the huge Ag multinationals that butter their bread. As a small independent farmer/rancher they don't want you saving your seeds for next years crop or using gov land for grazing. They are doing everything possible to put you out of business through ridiculous gov USDA and EPA regulation.

The handwriting is on the wall. If you are a small farmer/rancher or manufacturer you are competing with the big boys running the show and your days are numbered.

I can't understand why Bundy is a folk hero.  He is a thief.  He is making lots of money off the land the government owns which we all are able to use.  All of us can go hunt it, camp on it, etc. for no cost (state licenses may add some) paid to the federal government.   So why should he be able operate a business on it to make a profit without ponying up a use fee.  The timber companies buy the timber, as they should, when they log National Forest lands.

The people who say the government shouldn't own any western lands must not know what a posted sign is.  If it was private none of us would be able to set foot on it.  Has Bundy opened up his ranch to hunters for no trespass fee, just come on by?  Doubt it.

Come out to Nevada and see how 'public' your land is. You will see large signs proclaiming 'Your public lands, managed by BLM'. Take a dirt road 100 yards off the highway and you'll see 'No vehicles beyond this point, or 'Area of critical environmental concern'.

Try exploring the desert on foot, and get back to us.

Kind of surprised that he is still walking around free. Since this seemed to have settled down, it is weird to me that they haven't just rolled him up one day on his way to town for supplies or something.

Then again, the government had countless opportunities to do this with Koresh but apparently wanted the optics of a full blown tactical raid.
They might want the same here, they can get rid of him, send a message to the anti government types, tie it in with the anti gun agenda and even the blacklivesmatter stuff since Bundy is apparently a white separatist/racist.

That would be really stupid.  It would really suck to be tagged for that "mission."  But, the lovely folks at Ruby Ridge, Waco weren't hand-picked volunteers.   Kinda like the cops with the dogs/fire hoses & clubs in Selma (back in the 60's) weren't either.

Not to jump in the middle and I'm not really well versed in western lands rules.....

But at this  point in the game I pretty much support anyone and everyone who is up for telling .fed to fuck off. And Bundy did that so I'm good with it. Money or laws or regulations be damned... That's what got us here in the first place.

I just can't believe we were nearly in a situation where Americans would have harmed other Americans over cattle grazing.

Seems a bit insane on the part of both sides frankly.  Surely, an equitable and fair solution could be found without having to make it such a big deal.

What I wouldn't give for a Government that cared about its people and a people that felt they were apart of their Government as one team looking for all of us to succeed and grow stronger together. Instead we get ridiculous incidents like the Bundy Ranch standoff, riots, and all sorts of crap.  If we were ever really united there literally wouldn't be any force on earth that could stop us.

I though he had been trying to pay them and they wouldn't take the money?

If I recall correctly, he had been "trying" to pay for the grazing rights of his herd based on the historic/current herd size.  New rules which had been placed into effect and he'd been ignoring would require Bundy's herd size to be dramatically smaller to qualify for the permits.

The smaller herd sizes would mean he wouldn't need as much land to graze on and he'd lose water rights.  The smaller herd size also would mean his business would become unsustainable and he'd be on his way out of the market.

I'm kind of curious. We have so many posters saying Sally Jewell is horribly ugly and all that, but I don't know what they or their wives look like. I'm skeptical that all of them are modeled on Adonis and Aphrodite.

It would have fucked him long and hard.

After the BLM changed the rules arbitrarily, they also made new contracts and if he would have accepted it, it would have ceded his water rights to the BLM. Secondly, accepting the contract would have drastically capped his herd limit.  His is the only herd out there in land that used to support many, many more animals.  His herd is bred to survive better in that climate. It is also fed...  hay.   They are market cattle.  They "graze" but are fed a shit ton in feed bunks. It would have been RETARDED to take the BLM deal.

You in another post state people don't know what they're talking about, then try to pull out some philosophy about the purpose of the BLM and tragedy of the commons. You might want to learn a little more about what's going on before spouting off like that again.  Also might want to look at who actually IS destroying BLM land and habitat.  Hint: look for who is building energy projects and who is allowing it.

Fail.

Bundy can run as many cattle as he wants on his own land.

Just curious, how much is the BLM going to pay him for his water rights? you do realize he owns the deeded  water rights for said land right?Oh thats right, thats the only way they would give him their grazing permit was to forfeit his water rights...which he refused to do......
