Well, I guess it's better than looting liquor stores for kicks.....
Personally, I've never even tried to solve one of those things.

I had one back in the early '80s. I never figured out how to do more than two sides. But it didn't interest me enough to try more than that.

I also had a Pyraminx, which I thought was a more interesting shape.

Solving a rubik's cube or doing it fast?

Buy a book on solving a rubik's.  It looks hard, but it's really not.

Speed comes from practice and being young.  You're never going to have the reflexes that young man has.  He simply processes shit faster.

Fastest I've seen is 43 seconds. Same guy did just over a minute while we were out at the bar having drinks.

But that guy in the video? Thats fast. I mean, for fast people thats fast....

I had that, too. Remember "The Orb?" It was a grey sphere with colored beads twisting around the circumference. That was when everyone was trying to come up with their own Rubik's. There was also "The Snake," which wasn't a puzzle, but you could make it into some cool shapes and shit. I had all that crap.

When you buy the 3x3 cube, the packaging comes with a booklet on how to solve it.  I think my fastest time with the 3x3 was around 1:20.

No doubt he knows what he's doing but I don't believe it can always be solved in that few amount of moves. They are understandably excited but I could have done without hearing all those 'H' bombs.

I can solve one, it's basically a matter of memorizing a bunch of different algorithms, aka specific ways to spin certain sides of the cube achieve a specific result.  I do it layer by layer, get the bottom layer first, then do the middle layer (just two algorithms for that layer, which are mirrors of each other), then there's several different algos you need to know to solve the top layer.  I can do it in under 3 minutes, but 5 seconds is completely unfathomable to me.

Not that I EVER solved a 3x3 cube, but honestly, I think the timing should begins when the cube is revealed and include his evaluation of the randomized cube before he begins to solve it physically. Perhaps that's not part of it due to established "Rubiks Rules". lol

I can solve the Pyraminx. I haven't messed with one in probably fifteen years, so it might take me ten minutes to do it now.
The Cube I solved once by watching youtube vids. I couldn't do it again, so I gave up.

Same, I was really happy when I solved it under a minute.  About the best I could do.  Loved that pyramid thing as well.

You can always tell somebody's age if they knew about changing the stickers to solve a rubiks cube.  Or just disassembling it.  Amazing device and hugely popular.

It's not that hard once you know the algorithms.    my best time was ~2:00   but i'm so out of practice now,   i'm good if I solve one side.

That's the method I use, and my times are similar to yours. Good enough for a party trick. These guys are using completely different approaches that are way harder to memorize like the Fridrich Method. The speed at which they process everything is stunning.
