Typical of most Olympic venues, no? Beijing and sochi will be the same.
ETA: I mean typical for third world type places that hold the games. |

It always seemed stupid to spend all that money to build structures that have no use after the games are over. Why not have a dedicated Olympics center that is used over and over every four years? Have the various countries pay X amount for upkeep.

HATER - that was all about millions of shovel-ready jobs that were created or saved.

This is why I don't understand why have these games in countries that can't support it afterwards.
Olympics is a "wonder", it shows a countries wealth and capabilities and showcases it... but it generates no real revenue... in fact, it costs billions that will never come back. |

A few thousand years from now, it will all be uncovered and it will thought of like the old Greece is today. |

The Olympics suck.
Baseball is not an Olympic sport but table tennis, handball, and badminton are, what a joke. Fuck the Olympics. I will watch when baseball is back on the menu.

I haven't been into the Olympics in a long long time. Gone are the days of the 1980 Winter Olympics.
I don't get the feeling that any of our athletes even care a wit about representing the nation. What I see is a lot of dope smoking, self important types being subsidized by corporations and begging for money from the average joe. They go and act like assholes and hit the news get caught smoking dope and embarrassing their team. Not all but damned if it doesn't seem to happen every year. All the olympics have had corruption. The Greeks just did it on a grand scale. If they were too stupid to realize "friends" of the in folks made the money and the money came from others, whether tax subsidized or not. |

While some conspiracy theorists speculate the IOC’s ’05 secret vote to cut softball was a politically motivated attempt to punish the US for the Iraq war, it’s more likely the result of a lack of participation. You would think local schools could have used those grounds for competitions. If its already built it just needs to be half assed maintained instead of being allowed to fall into ruin.

The Atlanta Olympics did a good job to repurpose its venues, but most foreign govt's do not, and the places just become the money pits that they were.

Athens' Ghost Airport Built in 1938, it was used as a Luftwaffe base during the Nazi occupation of Greece. It was then used by the United States Air Force after the end of World War Two.
The airport had two terminals: the West Terminal for Olympic Airways, and the East Terminal, designed by star Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, for all other carriers. In its heyday, shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis ran Olympic Airways in lavish style, and his partner Maria Callas added a touch of glamour. Before its closure on March 30, 2001, the airport was serving 12 million passengers per year. http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1388041/athens-ghost-airport.jpg http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1388036/control-tower.jpg http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1388031/abandoned-plane-athens.jpg http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1388043/athens-ghost-airport.jpg http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1388044/athens-ghost-airport.jpg http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1388042/athens-ghost-airport.jpg http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1388032/athens-ghost-airport.jpg http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1388038/athens-ghost-airport.jpg Even the Aircraft I'm surprised no one has taken parts off of those aircraft to sell. They basically cut the airport in half and dumped all the Olympic venues there. Google earth address is here : Leoforos Posidonos, Elliniko 167 77, Greece I will say the one thing, the Olympics brought Greece a reason to upgrade their transportation infrastructure ie highways . That's one of the few lasting positives from 2004 |
