I'm looking for something sporty with good gas mileage (30ish mpg).  I haven't paid attention to cars in twenty years (two marriages and a kid), so I am looking for ideas.

I'm 6'2", 190lbs, drive about fifteen miles one way to work.

I'm liking the 2012 Honda Civic coupe, but I decided to throw this into GD and see what ideas (and yuks) pop up.

UPDATE:

I found a NEW 2015 Honda Civic Coupe LX with a manual transmission for $17K.

I
drove the Fusion, Versa and Corolla.  They were nice, but the Civic was
a much more responsive drive.  The actual car I will be buying is at a
different dealer and I will pick it up tomorrow.  Evidently the manual
transmission models are hard to find.  I drove an EX manual and was
delighted with it.  Unfortunately, the EX model has a sun roof and it
was a bit of a squeeze for me.  I sat in a automatic LX and had plenty
of room.

pass on the 2012 civic.

That year's model was pretty much panned by everybody.

Get an 8th gen Civic Si (2006-2011) if you want a sporty civic

2011ish Acura TL. I have one and it is sporty yet roomy (6'5"). Might be a little more than your budget, but not by much.

Thanks.  I don't think I was being very objective in my research on that model year.

I'm getting there with my 14 year old vehicle approaching 200k miles.  I need awd for the next vehicle though due to the climate here in Crapetticut.  I have been looking at slightly used Toyota Rav4's with like 10 to 20k miles at most for that price range.

Never mind the silly fuel efficient Civic's and Camry's, or the gas guzzling F-150's to go to and from work in.
Drive to work with some style, go Magnum style and you might only have to stretch your budget a tad.

2010-2013 mazda 3's.  Probably want to look into the skyactiv models (12 and 13) since those are the only ones that will get around 30mpg during spirited driving.

If you want a less expensive option, there is the 2005-2006 toyota Corolla XRS.

do NOT buy the 2012 civic. The reason you see so many 2012 civics for sale is because they did a design change that year and it is CRAPPY.

Get a 2011 or 2013. I love my 2013.

I'm pretty sure that's the base price for a rebuilt "bobbed" deuce-and-a-half with the multi-fuel engine.

I'd drive one of those to work.

25mpg city and 30mpg highway with great handling and very good power that is easily increased with a tune for about $500

You should be able to find a good Mark V or VI generation for 15k

At least go drive one and form your own opinion. When I bought my Mark VI in 2012 I paid 23k new

Ford Fusion, should be plenty of selection in that price range. We have a V6 with auto transmission, it isn't a sports car, but it drives well enough. It has been absolutely reliable. A Camry or Accord is always a good suggestion, but they tend to hold their value better (which is great if you are buying new, it sort of sucks if buying used), and the Fusion is just as reliable in my experience.

Resale isn't a concern to me.  I drive my vehicles to the end.  My previous truck was on fire when I drove it to the salvage yard (little bit of oil dripping on the exhaust manifold from a hole in the block.)

You couldn't go wrong with a Honda Civic. It'll run for decades if you take care of it, and 30MPG would be easy for that car to beat.

Honda is GTG.
